Maighstir: Just entering an unfamiliar communication medium may be a blocker, even if just to make a single post. If Facebook is all you've ever learned and used, these forums are quite alien.
Oh come on. How alien and confusing can clicking on "new post" be? Or is the average Facebook user really that stupid? Actually wait, don't answer that. But still, anyone actually capable of making an account here and playing a videogame other than Dance Dance Something Party Superstar should be able to manage. It's not like anyone registered on GOG through Facebook and uses it to play Farmville.

Or just sit there holding the Holy Handgrenade :(

There really should be a GOGalaxy get together for Worms World Party when it gets here. Might be some fun.

Maighstir: There are also those who have accounts on GOG but really only use it for the games and would rather not bother with internet-powered social interaction outside Facebook (or Twitter, as the case may be). This notification is for those who have a greater presence here than on Facebook but still have an account there so that they can partake in the contest that may be targeted towards those who don't visit the forums at all and may, for all I know, even have difficulty understanding how to use older kinds of social media (eg. forums, in this case) because it doesn't work like what they're used to (Facebook).

Ideally, contests would be open for participation from all media where GOG has a presence (GOG.com forums, Facebook, Twitter, Google plus, ...?), but as it stands, it seems GOG instead makes different contests for different groups. I am excluded from those contests that require using the aforementioned social networks, while, in turn, those people who do not visit the GOG.com forums are effectively (though not technically) excluded from those contests that require participating via the forums (I could technically create a throwaway account on said social media sites, but -- by my own choice -- I won't bother doing so).
What I take from Wishbone's post is this:
when you make social media a requirement, either for getting information which really belongs on your own website,
That's what I'm more concerned about, and that's exactly what I pointed out in my post here - GOG saw fit to give a heads up on Twitter about last chances for two games in the sale, but not in the sale's thread. Have we reached the point where everyone and their cat is expected to follow social media, and if they don't they're irrelevant?

I can't recall the details, but it's not the first time they don't bother making announcements on the site.

I see what I did there. ;)

P.S. Thanks for the contest, GOG. No facebook, so not in, but good luck to the entrants!

This I can agree with, my statement was solely concerning the contest.

You mean you missed the free Witcher 3 for everybody on GOG's Bebo list?! O_______o
You want to know my winning strategy? I'll tell you my winning strategy.

My winning strategy is to not reveal my winning strategy ! ;p

MagmaDragoon: * So, if I win the plushie but don't live in USA will you guys be able to send it?
* What's impeding me from calling some buddies to like my comment on Facebook?
A) Yes
B) Nothing! But that's why we also have a jury of Worms fans put together, to not make it solely based on likes :)
So, it seems that the following line from my post:
avatar
Ciris: Sorry if you're feeling this bitter about our social media crowd - but this is exactly why this post was made, to let the forum users know as well about an event they may have otherwise missed :)
raised quite a lot of discussion. So since the contest is going to be over in a short time anyway, how about I answer these questions, accusations, and complaints.

Elmofongo: I don't have Facebook or Twitter and don't want to.
Literally no one is forcing you to. You simply don’t have to participate. Similarly, if we were doing a real-life event, say on Gamescom, and you didn’t have a way to get there, it would not be held against you if you didn’t make it.

avatar
Cyraxpt: Hey Ciri, is it possible to ask around the office to send someone over here so that we (community) can discuss the problems with gog/forum?
I’ll try to arrange for some form of forum AMA/Q&A session with someone from the website team, someone from the product team, someone from the business development (game-signing) team, and someone from the galaxy team. I'm not sure how far off in the future it'd happen, but I'll try to make it happen not too far off. How’s that?

avatar
HypersomniacLive: I assume that this "let the forum users know as well" does not apply to other announcements of interest made on your social media, like an item in the sale making its last appearance, eh?
On-site, you can see a 24-hour timer letting you know when deals expire. During the next sale, I can try to participate more in a thread where I’d post deals that are appearing for the last time - however, the workload has run high during this sale (and right after the TW3 release) for us all. [redacted]

avatar
Wishbone: You mean unlike your usual approach, where you make announcements of this and that on Facebook and Twitter, and the people who only use the forum, your own forum, on your own site, are none the wiser?
We make announcements of stuff in news posts on the website. That’s what they’re for, and they are curated by a content manager. I curate social media, and the rules about what goes there are much more liberal - as I’m the one who makes them.
However, all releases, updates, and new game content do appear on the forum in news posts, dedicated forum threads, and profile notifications.

avatar
Wishbone: I don't mind you having a social media presence (why would I?), but it does annoy me when you make social media a requirement
It’s not a requirement. As I compared above, it’s kind of as if people got upset over us announcing a live meetup in a place they can’t get to at the time of the meetup - it’s not a REQUIREMENT to be there, since you’re free to simply not join. Same as this contest :)

Phew.

Wall of text done.

Time for a TL;DR:

I hope that helps clear things up and gives off the vibe of:
1) you’re not REQUIRED to participate in anything you don’t want to be a part of;
2) some people that use social media are on these forums more often than social media, and this announcement is mainly for them;
3) I’ll try to make time to announce stuff in a more specific way on the forums if the current information flow is not satisfying to some of you.

There was a twitter contest earlier this week.
Now we have Facebook contest.
Shall we expect Reddit, Instagram, Youtube and Google+ contest in near future? (o_O)

I just wanted to ask when a user gets downvote his rep decreases but what happens when men in blue get downvote? Do they loose their jobs? (o_O)

EDIT: I forgot to add reddit.

That is not a good comparison and I think you know it. If there is a live event then it's obvious it has to be at one place, and it won't be convenient for everybody. We're not idiots. But this Facebook contest? There is no reason we could not as well write our entries here on the forum in this thread. It is your choice to make the contest exclusive to Facebook, not a practical neccessity.

Breja: But this Facebook contest?
It is NOT a "facebook contest". It is a facebook viral marketing campaign in the "add gog visibility on your social network page and be maybe rewarded for it" style (we already had a few of them, based on various popular social medias). If there wasn't a facebook, there would be no worms "contest".

So, no big deal. If you don't want to participate in that collective advertising (and be paid for it with a lottery ticket) then fine, I don't either. But then it doesn't make any sense to complain "me too me too !". It is missing the point of the whole thing (which is not to just gratuitously hand out game codes).

Actually, there were some Youtube contests in the past (doing a video review of a GOG game and putting a GOG splash screen at the end)

And for Reddit, I think there was something about it a few weeks ago....
Honestly.... some people would moan if they won the lottery...... jesus, no wonder that dev (I forget which) branded PC Gamers bitchers.
