ZenWan: Thank you for all the work you're doing, Crow. All the more appreciated as you are not enjoying the sale.
A question: I have never played Heroes of Might & Magic - was thinking of splurging on one of them, while the sale is on, but it can be only one. From reviews I've read, it should be 2 or 3.
As you are an expert on just about all games, it seems to me, your opinion would be valuable. :-D
That was a serious remark, not sarcasm, I hasten to add. I am really impressed by the breadth and depth of your gaming knowledge and experience.
I should add that I have not played Baldur's Gate either. <hangs head>
I always tended to stick with Strategy / Sim games - Civ, Rise of Nations, EU etc.
But I thought it might be time to branch out..
First I must say the Heroes of Might & Magic series Are Strategies. Turn Based set in a fantasy settings (with spells and monsters and such), but definitely in the same grounds as most of those you've mentioned so it's not that much branching out ;)
I have played Heroes of Might & Magic 1 up to 5 (Didn't try any of the latter so far).
Amongst the fans, 3 is considered the best of the series. I concur as it does have the most content, especially in terms of community patches, including
several whole expansions, and even a whole set of games - Heroes Chronicles - based upon its engine and success. And of course the new Enhanced Version presented by Ubisoft (which is not recommended) is deriving from this - It will definitely provide the most replayability of them all.
The thing is, 3 is very much building itself upon what 2 brought, which in turn builds itself upon 1 (which in turn builds itself upon the original Kings Bounty, but on a massively bigger scale in all terms).
This means you might enjoy 3 much less if you didn't try 2 before, and as an introduction to the series, I must recommend 2 or 1 instead of 3.
1 Is the easiest to get into, and can be virtually finished within about a month or so (there is more content obviously, but you won't be feeling that "I shouldn't be missing this out!" drive the content for 3 gives you). So if your time is limited, perhaps it would suit you to try 1 first.
2 is the most beautiful of them all - in terms of classic 2d drawing and animations (3 was the first that moved into the direction of 3D), and it certainly has quite an amazing medieval atmosphere to it. I may have not returned to it that much after going through 4 and 5, but it is definitely my favorite after 3 which is indeed the best.
So it all comes to this:
For an easy introduction and fairly short time span - 1 Is the best choice.
2 - If you want to get the best vibe and into beautiful hand drawn imagery, even if at times you find it a bit complex (until you get the hang of it).
If you want to get the most of your buck and the prestige of your colleagues - You Must Get 3.
But it comes at the price of a learning curve which is higher for those that haven't experienced with the previous titles, and such an abundance of content, much of it very much Game Changing, that you will have to delve into it for a quite while if you wish to receive the whole experience!
Hope it helps :)
