LynetteC: Aww, man! I can't believe this is the first time I've had to get online to chat and it's the end of the sale! :-(

Didn't stop me sneaking in a fair few purchases on my tablet at work - I even managed to unlock Xenonauts this afternoon and my husband is now the proud owner of The Walking Dead series. So much for saving money this time around!

So, how's everyone here? Did you all get what you wanted in the sale?
avatar
Grargar: It's not the end of the sale yet. It will end on 21 June.
Ha, shows how much attention I've been paying! I just thought with everything appearing at once that this was the Grand Finale! Thanks Grargar.

Glad to hear the sale's going on until 21st - payday's on the 15th so the spending can start again! :-)

Heya, LynetteC! Good to see you! You unlocked Xenonauts already? Dang! ^_^

My wallet is tied up in Kickstarters (so addictive!), so I've been very careful about my spending. Thus far, I have picked up CLARC, The Wolf Among Us, and will be getting Kholat when it launches tonight. If I can manage it, I'll probably get the Sam & Max Bundle, too. Beyond that, there are a number of things I would probably scoop up if I had the excess cash. I'll have to let this sale play out a bit more before I go too crazy and then can't afford something I really want. #GOGSaleProblems

IAmSinistar: This is a Day One buy for me as well. I love these true-life mysteries.

Tekkaman-James: Just got a tweet from the developers. Kholat will be available on GOG at Midnight GMT (7pm EDT for me).
Not sure what the launch discount is going to be (if any), but it'll be on my shelf and downloading to my HDD at 7:01pm EDT.
I've never been so excited to get so scared! ^_^
You HAD to post that, didn't you? 1am BST - how can I resist? :-)

I don't know! Someone needs to find out what really happened to those hikers!

It's quite scary how many of these bundles I actually own in their entirety!

I was only 2p away from unlocking Xenonauts when The Walking Dead series was announced this afternoon so I bought it for my husband (I told him it was a belated anniversary present as it was our 15th wedding anniversary yesterday! lol)

Most of the stuff on my wislist is now the expensive stuff and as I have a backlog I'll be playing for ten years after I die I've held off on stuff like Divinity: Original Sin, Wasteland 2 and Pillars of Eternity.

I did succumb to the temptation of The Wolf Among Us and I'll no doubt be buying Kholat in the early hours now that you've brought it to my attention. :-)

Oh! A belated Happy Anniversary to the two of you! How nice that you can share your love of GOG deals with your husband!

I feel your pain on the backlog issue. It wouldn't be so bad if I wasn't hopelessly addicted to the time-vacuum that is Marvel Heroes. Fortunately, Kholat and Wolf Among Us are strong enough to break me away for a few days at least.

The discounts on the pricier games are attractive, but I am taking a miss on them this time around, too.

Anything you're hoping to see go on sale? Personally, I wouldn't mind Chroma Squad or Shovel Knight showing up.

Tekkaman-James: Cool! I haven't read that one. I may have to pick that one up sometime in the near future. The author's hypothesis seems to have many readers divided. If you've finished the book, what is your spoiler-free opinion on his take?
Actually, I am selectively reading the book. I am skipping the chapters which take place in the "present" (the time the book was written) and only reading the historical chapters. I frankly hate non-fiction where the author injects themselves into the story, though since the author here is a documentary filmmaker the tendency is at least understandable. I only really find it palatable in books where the author's participation is crucial to the story, like Into Thin Air.

If you have recommendations for other books, please share them. The next one I am looking to pick up is
Dyatlov Pass Keeps Its Secret. It seems the most likely to be objective.

Tekkaman-James: If you have Netflix, you might want to check out the movie Devil's Pass. It's take on the story is a bit more sci-fi than I would have liked, but it is still a very well-made film regarding the subject. I might have to watch it tonight just to get in the mood.
Thanks, I'll give it a second look in. I've seen it on there but wasn't sure how sensationalistic/b-movie it was. I don't mind a b-movie, but not on a subject from real life that is much more interesting. Your recommendation is enough for me to give it a chance. :)

IAmSinistar: Into Thin Air.
Those three words bring to me an almost compulsive desire to go off-topic on about six different tangents (lots of Seattle connections; I'm hanging out with Fischer's kid, friend of a friend, soon), but instead I'll try to finish up my work and go take a look at the game. :)

<painful squirming...>

It is definitely objective. Almost to a fault. It reads like a textbook, but if you really want to know about this subject, it's the most factual. It has a nice selection of photos, map images and scans of documents relating to the search and the medical examinations. Some of the images it uses can be easily found online, but it's nice to have them on the page as you are reading through the chronology of it all.

Mountain of the Dead isn't bad. It has plenty of facts (although, most of which you can just find online) and keeps its claims based in reality, but there is still plenty of speculation. Ultimately, if you want to avoid unnecessary fluff, you'll have a much better time with Dyatlov Pass Keeps Its Secrets than probably any other book on the subject.

Don't think it's been mentioned yet - differences to the single-day discounts (besides Game of Thrones now being -50% instead of -40% as CarrionCrow already said):

Discounted newly:
Master of Orion 1+2 - 50% off ($2.99)

Not discounted again:
Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold
Blake Stone: Planet Strike
Pid
Red Baron Pack
Still Life
Still Life 2

Late edit: Removed the erroneously listed two movies from the list.

Thank you very much for taking the time to point those out. =)

Total honesty moment - this sale format is boring the everloving crap out of me, and it's only on day 7 of 18.
Wasn't up to digging through every single entry, so I'm even more appreciative that you did so.

Thanks very much! I did order the book, and your recommendation makes me feel sure I made the right decision. I also tossed in one on Tunguska that I hope is more factual than most I've encountered. I don't mind a solid, scholarly read on such subjects, and frankly prefer that over colourful but baseless speculation. I've got most of the late William Corliss's books on unusual natural phenomenae, and they are stolid but useful reading.

Much ta mate!

You know, I was (and I hate that I have to put this in the past tense) an avid reader. But I really haven't read as much as I'd like lately. It's really something I enjoy. I've never heard of this event but based on the game description and your brief synopsis here I might have to put in a request for this one with my library tomorrow! Maybe this is the one to get me out of my funk!

Also, this isn't like a "I'm not saying it's aliens... but it's aliens" type of book is it? I hate to even ask because based on your description it sounds like a far cry from that. Basically I'm looking for a bit of historical "unsolved mysteries grounded in actual fact" detective work. Lack of a conclusion doesn't bother me.

Ixamyakxim: Also, this isn't like a "I'm not saying it's aliens... but it's aliens" type of book is it?
Fortunately, no. While the incident definitely has its fair share of otherwordly theories, this book sticks firmly to the facts. It tries its best to avoid filling in the gaps with baseless speculation and just tells you what happened. I'm sure the game, much like the movie I mentioned, will venture into a more supernatural realm to keep the game scary, but that's fine by me when I know it's what I'm in store for.

No problem. :) Turns out I made a bit of a mistake, the two movies are on sale after all, just buried at the bottom of the staff picks section.

I do hope we get a few new items on sale, although I have the suspicion it'll be limited to new bundles...
