deejrandom: You know, if I had bought Gothic for 50 bucks I would have been *really* upset. But since I got it for six and there is a big group of people here at GOG saying that there is a good game underneath, I decided to give it a try. Sometimes you have to dig through a pile of crap (or bad controls) to find the gem underneath :D
I have to grab gothic 2 at some point.
Grab Gothic 2. For only 9.99 US you get more content than most of the new releases in the RPG genre. Besides that, the game aged so damn well that it looks better than Gothic 3. Hell, it just looks damn awesome even without the apocalyptic levels of bloom and all that other crap that infests games of today.
Also, it has the choice of G2 controls or Gothic 1 controls for when you are feeling hardcore and all.
One thing about all our comments here, bringing the subject back around to the topic, is that none of them are fake. All of our comments about Gothic are real: anyone that reads this and other threads can see that, I think.
Unless we are just a thousand monkeys banging on a thousand keyboards...

I had the first and second, but like a lot of things, the disks ended up disappearing between moves. Alot of these games seem to have people that have made upgraded visual packs.. I wonder if thief has one. I know Duke Nukem 3d does...

Not really sure if Thief has a high res upgrade. All I know about the DarkEngine and the tools for modding for it is that both the tools and engine are quite unwieldly beasts that only dedicated teams can actually mod the Thief games. Of course, the preceding statement comes from mostly hearsay.

Check out Daemonite's Thief Model Patch (which imports the improved Thief 2 models into Thief) and the Thief Enhancement Pack (which has high-res models for various objects and weapons). No high-res texture pack exists, however, because the Build engine doesn't automatically adjust texture dimensions to fit the specified surface area, meaning each and every mission would require extensive editing.

Ah well thanks for that info! I'll wait a bit and see if GOG gets the games, if not I'll have to hun them down.

Is Thief really that good? Because i only played Thief 3 for a brief while and didn't find it all that great.

Yes Thief is THAT good. It cures cancer, it is a faith healer that actually heals people. It is so damned good that if it was given the chance it could reconcile the hostilities between Israel and Palestine.
Also, Thief (the first game) will forever tarnish any game for you that tries to be a game with "stealth elements". It was the first and damn near only sneaker game (Splinter Cell tries so hard it is almost cute....) and in my opinion it will be the last sneaker game ever.
Thief 3 isn't for everyone but I like it because it still has Garret and I can still rob people blind....

I like all three Thief games. I try not to hype something to much, because one man's chocolate is another man's garbage... But yah I do love the series..it does stealth better then most games imho.
