Hi GOGers,
With the arrival of Mr. Awesome, a.k.a. Duke Nukem, we’ve prepared a selection of mods exclusively for all the GOG.com’s fans, along with some impressions of one of our Support/QA guys, Skreczi.
High Resolution Mod
Skreczi said:
HEEEEELLLLLLL YEAH! The best mod ever! It brings Duke Nukem 3D into full 3D with fully tri-dimensional monsters, weapons and items! Totally must have for everyone! Still reading it? Don’t waste more time – download it now!
Duke Plus
Skreczi said:
Full of new features (weather effects, new light effects, transparent water etc.), new gameplay elements, new weapons and much more. Also come with new levels that demonstrate capabilities of this babe :) Two thumbs up!
Hellduke TC!
Skreczi said:
Pretty cool total conversion in DooM style. There are some strange things like flying Imps and you have mini UZI instead of a pistol but this mod has some potential. Level design is not that bad, some monster still needs to be implemented but if you are a DooM fanboy you should definitely give it a try.
Naferias Reign - Invasion of The Dark Mistress
Skreczi said:
Duke Nukem with some action RPG elements. Play as Duke or other character in his team. New voice acting, more intelligent enemies, plus characters with their own special abilities and levels. Very cool and fun to play :)
Infestation in Time TC
Skreczi said:
Pretty good mod and a few new episodes taking action in the Duke Nukem universe. It has implemented some things from Duke Plus and it’s compatible with Duke Nukem High Res mod. A bit complicated but still a pretty good job.
Weapon of Mass Destruction
Skreczi said:
Very well made total conversion where you can buy additional stuff and abilities, jump into your own skycar, kick some more alien butts, use new awesome skills and level up your guns! Very fun to play!
Aliens vs. Duke
Skreczi said:
Very impressive total conversion that have everything that Alien Mod should have – weapons specific to Alienverse, atmosphere and cool model of Xenomorphs (including deadly facehugger).
Borg Nukem
Skreczi said:
Total conversion that brings Duke Nukem 3D to the Star Trek universe. It starts on Borg Cube and leads you through some mediocre design levels. To battle Borg you can use phasers, rifles and some other deadly Star Trek weaponry.

ethaninja: It's too bad the High Res mod doesn't work properly for me. All the text is just white boxes =(
Same thing here ... from what I gathered, it has to do with ATI graphics cards and the HRP not being optimized for them.

Happened to see this post and wanted to say that I found out what causes it. This has to do with OpenGL mode and having texture mode set to trilinear bilinear, etc. You need to change it to NEAREST. Drop down the console and type r_texturemode 0. That should fix it. Worked for me. If you aren't using the high res textures, then you can change it back to trilinear or whatever.

How do you "drop down the console?"

Cool. Thanks.
I would love to know if there were a way to re-bind the keyboard controls. I'm so set in the ways of playing WASD shooters that Duke feels impossible for me to play....

Are you playing it in the provided DOSBox? If so, just run the setup utility via the DOSBox (GOG may even have provided a link to it).

Alternatively, use an engine port with the game, like eDuke32, so that it runs natively in Windows. You can still run the game with the standard graphics and control methods, or you can add in extras, such as improved graphics, 3D models, lighting effects, a proper mouse look, etc.

I went into the dos setup and remapped the keys, but when I launch Duke from it, and from the standard shortcut, the game crashes/doesn't start. I have to use the Graphic Mode Setup shortcut and choose DDraw to play the game. It won't play, otherwise.

Edit: Although, I would like to say, eDuke32 works flawlessly. Thanks for the tip!

The crashes may be a rendering issue with DOSBox on your machine. You could try changing the DOSBox settings to use a different renderer permanently and see if that solves it.

Also, some settings (DOSBox and the Duke3D in-game config settings) may not be saved if you installed to Program Files (applies to Vista and 7) because of UAC and DEP. To avoid this install into your own folder, such as C:\Games\Duke3D\

But anyway, glad eDuke32 has sorted you out. It is a good engine. :)
Nice mods! But I noticed that some of them don't work on Windows 7. :(

Crud...hope at the very least Duke plus works.
If you want a Duke Nukem Forever experience a'la 2001 trailer (yeah bros, just forget about that 2011 crap...), there's a final version of Duke Nukem Eternity mod. And it's great, even if it needs a hell of a machine to ruin fluidly (there's a performance patch, tho).

Look at this beauty: YouTube

Making a fresh install of EDuke3d with all necessary CON and GRP files is highly advised!

This is why you turn off UAC in the control panel. :)

True, you can choose to turn off UAC and DEP, but they do provide a level of system protection and installing games into a non-protected folder is just fine for me.
