Stronghold: Lord of the Rings(TM) mod spotlight

With this small article we're starting a brand new section of "the best mods for Good Old Games".

In this short reviews we will take a closer look at some of the best, the biggest and the most fun mods that have been created for games that are available in the GOG.com's games catalogue. For the first mod spotlight we decided to look at Stronghold and The Lord of the Rings™ mod. Jump in and check out our testers' (Skreczi and Paczyk) opinions on this fan modification. We'll try to post similar mod spotlights from time to time, so if you have any comments or recommendations let us know!

Today we have something for fans of J.R.R. Tolkien's work. Believe it or not, with this mod you can change the Medieval settings of Stronghold into the fantasy world of the Middle-Earth! Below you'll find Skreczi's and Paczyk's opinions on The Lord of the Rings™ mod for Stronghold.

Stronghold – The Lord Of The Rings™ mod

Skreczi: For the love of Valar! It is one of the most awesome mods I've ever seen! Just imagine how incredible it would be to play Stronghold with the music, movie clips and detailed history of Middle Earth. And not only Third Age -- this mod has it all!

The creators of this pack took the effort to recreate battles from the Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, Lost Tales, Lays of Beleriand, Lost Road and History of Middle Earth. Defend or attack Amon Sul, Dale, Caras Galadhon, Cirith Ungol, Gondolin, Isengard or even Minas Tirith! When I launched this mod for the first time I was impressed by almost everything - from the intro, music and maps to briefings and missions themselves.

The only downsides to the mod are the limitations of Stronghold itself -- we don't have new units, textures or graphics. However, what we do have is more than enough not only for a J.R.R. Tolkien fan but for any Stronghold fanatic! So don't wait any longer; take that quest and lead the forces of good or evil into battle, and experience for yourself 65,000 years of Middle Earth history.

Paczyk: Epic win! What else can I say? This mod is made so professionally with such attention to detail that for a minute there I just couldn't believe that this is just a game modification not an official expansion! Why are you still reading this?! Go take a castle or something!

You can download the mod on Stronghold Heaven fan site.

juancho: So good, that i am actually thinking of buying the game, does the mod work for the Crusader game or just the original Stronghold?

On mod site there is info that mod requires Stronghold v 1.2 so I think that only with Stronghold.
9
I really like this new feature. I'm thinking about picking up Stronghold as a result of this!
10
Thanks for the info GOG! (Downloading the MOD now).
11
Good stuff! Keep it coming, good mods can be hard to find.
12
This is an excellent idea and, as far as marketing goes, spreading the word about exciting mods could definitely make some people more inclined to buy certain games from GOG. Moar!
13
I think its a great idea, I actually play some mods more then the original game they replace.
14
Awesome idea.
One question, though: would it be very expensive for GOG to host the mods reviewed? You can never depend too much on third-party hosting... Fan-sites come and go, and GOG stays, after all :).
15
It's a great idea! Mods are a big part of gaming on the long tail -- what other GOG games are modded like this? I know Freespace has a strong modding community ... what else is out there?
16
Definitely need to continue to spotlight the mods that have manifested thus far for the GoG lineup...definitely.
17
Wow! It's a very great idea! Thank you, GOG :)
18
I definitely like the idea...and am now considering the Stronghold games.
19
Excellent idea. Not only to highlight interesting and fun mods, but also to persuade us goggers to pick up games we may have been on the fence about
Even I am possibly considering getting the stronghold series now being such a LoTR fan =)

I'm in the exact same situation. Good mods are a huge added value for a game, and since they're free it only costs you guys a bit of time to write that spotlight page. I know the forums dedicated to each game often mention which mods are available and what they do, but personally I only check them after I bought the game... so currently they dont play any role in my choice to buy or not.
Edit -
It may be a good idea to highlight the mod a bit more on the game page, I'd have missed the current sentence if i didnt know it was there. And maybe write a word or two about the mod on that page instead of just saying that there's a fan-made mod.

Vandal: Let us know what you think, folks! If you'd like to see more of this sort of content, you need to tell us... or else our bosses are all like, "hey you, marketing guys, shouldn't you be out there putting stickers up around town instead of writing about mods?" Please, they'll whip us.

Funny guy. :)
Definitely love it! More more more!
Also, as a long-term plan, might be cool to integrate these into each game's page, as in, click a tab or something like that and it goes to the mods page for the game, and from there you can preview each of the best, with the rest in the forums. Just throwing ideas out there -- maybe its best as is. :)
(Also, if it's possible to utilize the picture tool thing for the editorials as are on the gamecards, that would make these much easier to check out.)
Okay I'm done. :)

Great idea, GOG guys and gals! Looking forward to more mod spotlights in the future. Please keep this idea going, guys!
23
Eduke32 for Duke Nukem 3D might be a good idea for next "the best mods for Good Old Games" issue ;)

*ploink* (i.e. if I had just read the thread in more detail ... someone else already wrote what I was saying).

Its a great idea to highlight the mods for games, some of the most extensive mods made can really change gameplay a lot (some of the Unreal tourment and its sequal mods often made massive).
As an addition would it be possible to get GoG to put up hosting space for these mods? Many of GoGs games are older generation ones and the mods are often housed in few places and are often the early ones on the chopping board when the file hosters start a clean out. It would be very sad to lose these additions, some of which represent many hours of work in creation.

This is a great idea! Please give us more!

Yes, great initiative. Keep this going. And as a lot of others users have suggested you should host them yourselves.
