Downloaded on W10, 1803 and playing without issue. Not sure what the "mouse issue" is in another review, but after a few hours of gameplay, I have not seen it. I also set it up to play with my steam controller, no issues there and almost plays more intuitively with how I've set it up.
The game is exactly how I remember it: a pixelated mess of graphics with some clunky controls, but an otherwise great fantasy cRPG where you can be an elephant or ratman! I can't wait to keep playing.
I bought the game when it came out and it had really bad mouse lag but it has now been patched recently and the game runs great. It's as fun to play now as it was years ago. I especially like re-rolling for high point starting characters.
Thankfully, there has recently been a patch concerning the oft-mentioned mouse issues.
This is an interesting party-based game. It is a bit bogged down by the multiplayer handling of a singleplayer party. There are also many quirks and features not well-explained ingame, which can serve as a blessing to those who enjoy figuring things out. For others, most answers lie on the Ironworks Forum, which holds years of discussions and discoveries: http://ironworksforum.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=14
The game is completely playable with only the mouse and CTRL key. The areas are vast enough to feel like true exploration, without stalling gameplay. There are enough quests to push the player to almost all areas. The dungeons are a good size, but not so big as to lose the player's interest. There are various puzzles, but they all felt solvable without a walkthrough. There's some unique playable races I've never seen in another game. The party creation allows for good variety.
Much like Wizardry 8, the player may successfully complete the game with a party comprised of a single character. The game is so open-ended that some seemingly-critical steps of the main quest can be completely avoided. In fact, the player can leave the McGuffin behind, and still complete the game! There's many ways to "trick" the main quest, thinking "I've surely broken it now", only to find that the game still continues without error, and in fact has a specific way to cope with your nefarious plot to unhinge the story. With much effort, I found only one no-win situation!
Even after playing through the game several times, there were still surprises. Mainly in the form of rare enemies, but also in dialogue via keywords. To this day, there are still many mysteries. How does one acquire the hidden traits or the dark version of Kerah's statue? What could one do with that statuette, and could it possibly be a way to unlock one of said traits? The list goes on...can you discover the remaining secrets?
I could almost get this game to work without GoG except for the fact that the mouse lags horribly and simply will not move in certain directions at certain times. I tried dozens of fixes.
Naturally, I expected that if GoG took a crack at the game, the mouse issue would be addressed, but it's not. So the game is, unfortunately, literally unplayable.
Also, don't trust reviews that start say "I haven't played it yet, but..."
Generally W&W is a good dungeon crawl.
