Xenonauts is a strategy game in which you control a multi-national military organisation defending a Cold War-era Earth from alien invasion, using small squads of persistent soldiers to eliminate the extraterrestrials and recover their technology in turn-based ground combat. A detailed strategic layer allows you to co-ordinate the defence of the planet, using your interceptors to shoot down UFOs and researching captured artefacts to learn about your foes and unlock new combat equipment to use on your missions.
Xenonauts is a spiritual successor to the classic X-Com strategy games from the 1990s. We aim to improve the graphics, add new content and streamline the interface whilst still retaining all of the key mechanics of the original games. Devoted fans should love this game, but we're also keen to introduce the joys of old-school grand strategy to a whole new generation of players who might not otherwise experience it!
Ground Combat: Xenonauts delivers tense turn-based combat across realistic, varied and fully-destructible battlefields, against almost fifty different variants of enemy. Missions range from capturing crashed UFOs or alien bases to defending cities (or even Xenonaut facilities) against alien attack. You'll experience the chill of encountering a new alien for the first time and the joys of test-firing a new weapon for the first time. Deeply asymmetric combat keeps the battles interesting - after all, you're fighting intergalactic invaders with 1970's ballistic technology!
Persistent Soldiers: Soldiers in Xenonauts are persistent from mission to mission, improving their stats and gaining ranks with combat experience - but their deaths are always only a single bad move away. You will grow to care about the brave men and women under your command as they slowly grow from green rookies into hardened veterans, but that only makes it more painful when their heroic tale is cruelly cut short by a burst of plasma fire...
Research Tree: Xenonauts has an extensive research tree with almost a hundred projects to unlock, each with its own unique description and painted artwork. It slowly reveals the intentions and origins of the invaders, while also unlocking new battlefield equipment, aircraft and vehicles for you to use as you harness alien technology and turn it against them.

My Laptop is not the best one but I can easily run advanced games such as EUIII and CIV4. The graphics of the game is made to look like from the end of the 90's and game lags. Music and sounds are breaking all the time, sometimes the scroll does not work. I've installed the patch and it's all the time same.
In other words - games with 3D graphic run smoothly on my laptop
Xenonauts with retro graphic - lags and does not work properly.
Disappointed :-/
I can't even complete a single ground combat without save scumming every turn, and even then prepare to commit yourself to multi-hour combats where you save/reload constantly to temper the AI throwing it's units at you with no regard while you are their inferior in every way. The alternative, of course, is not to save scum and just lose the game. Cool, cool.
I almost put my fist through the wall playing on normal difficulty. I'm betting that the insane difficulty setting just uninstalls the game to mess with you.
Just play the OG X-COM, or Jagged Alliance instead.
It turns out that GOG allows only very short reviews, so I'll be brief.
The game is an exact remake of the old UFO/X-Com games, with all their flaws untouched, some new problems addend and absolutely no interesting new content whatsoever. We got anticlimactic graphics, lousy sound, and completely counter-intuitive interface that forces us to click around like crazy. Even Terror From the Deep was better in this aspect.
The worst element of the game is also it’s the most important part. I’m talking about tactical missions here. It’s hard to figure out what our actual line of sight is (darkness makes it even more problematic). Weapons have very limited range just “because” (it used to be limited by hardware), scrolling between our clones is performed without any assistance that would allow us not to waste time on troops who already have their TUs spent, we have to guess where we can fire or throw grenades and where it is impossible. If I had more space, I would describe awful mechanisms of outfitting troops, the biggest disappointment of the game that is dogfighting, and lagging strategic view.
The game feels like as if it was made in the year 1995 or even earlier. It has absolutely nothing to do with X-Com Apocalypse. It’s a very poor tribute to UFO: Enemy Unknown, especially to all flaws of the oldest games because all of them are still here in 2014. Xenonauts is appropriate only for fanatics of the genre.
