I consider X-Com Apocalypse as one of the best game I have ever played and probably you'll enjoy it too, as long as you like to fight some UFO. Well obviously among plenty of good features, I could count some flows, but nevertheless it's a unique game among all I've played and even among UFO fighting strategies.
I would give it 9/10
I remember the first time I've seen this game in 1998. My best friend showed it to me, and I was thinking OMG, such crappy graphics, my eyes bleed when I look at it!
Then I managed to look past the graphics and played the game myself. It immediately became the favourite turn based game of all times. Only game I've ever played through 3 times in a row even though every run takes about 40ish hours! This game is so insanely deep I honestly don't know any other tactical turn based strategy game which is comparable to this one. And no other XCOM Title came after this gem was comparable (Xenonauts was ok but XCOM APOC is at another level).
The complex dynamics among companies, base building, research, missions.... It is filled up with so much detail!
It is so nice to see this gem preserved by GOG! <3
X-Com Apocalypse represented the next evolutionary step from the iconic UFO Defense. This was when X-Com wanted to be more of a simulation than just a game for fun. It's something that has been forgotten since Firaxis took over. It's a shame to think what the next title would have looked like if it continued in this direction with a smoother development cycle. Bold and ambitious, Apocalypse remains the best in the franchise.
As a fan of the original X-Com's and the sequels I decided to give this a shot - tinkered with all the controls and completed one mission. The game feels like a downgrade from the original X-Com. The UI is less intuitive and ugly. Movement is clunky. The levels are very vertical but the game doesn't make a good job of switching between the different height levels. The path finding is a mess, especially when trying to move units as a whole squad. I don't like the 50's future sci-fi style with the rocket cars, but that is a matter of personal taste. The problem is that the graphics in general look like this game was released before X-Com. Animations, the aliens, everything looks worse than in the original, movement and shooting mechanics are janky and not as snappy as the original... while it does have some neat features such as being able to move people and cars around in the city, it doesn't make up for the other gameplay being less fluid and less attractive looking than the originals. I see how you can have fun playing this game, but you probably must have played it back in the day to appreciate it. I get too frustrated by the jankyness and find myself constantly thinking I'd prefer to play one of the originals or sequels instead.
