Well, that was a nice journey.
This game has solid art, a killer soundtrack and the cast is stylish as hell.
There is 2 phases: in the first, you wander around town, speak to people, take quests and do small time time jobs the cash necessary to repair and upgrade your mech.
The other is a turn based mech duel with various attacks, defenses and special moves that charges according to the battle stance you choose.
I won't say too much about the story butsimply know that you follow a crew of misfits that heritates a mech from an ancient friend and decides to become number 1, mostly for money. Add anthropomorphic animals, a mysterious bartender and an announcer who beats the 4th wall to a pulp and you get the essentials.
You can count between 15 to 20 hours to beat it.
Long story short : good game, get it.
I went in blind and was pleasantly surprised by the 25+ hour insanity this game delivers.
It's a pretty good mecha-fighter but the dialouge and style is the meat and potatoes for me here. Most of this game is spent walking around adventure-game style and following superbly voice acted dialouge.
The writing is so strange and hops back and fourth between poop jokes and serious themes, but without the sense of whiplash one would expect. It's very sure of its own identity and wears its influences proudly. I think the best word to describe the tone here is "eccentric". I was hooked from beginning to end and would often have a big disgusting smirk on my face.
This game is fresh, it's funny, it's utterly stupid and brilliant at times. Give it a chance, there aren't a lot of games like Wolfstride out here, let alone so confidently well executed.
Definitely keeping my eye on the devs in the future.
Wanted to post a PSA for anyone looking to buy this:
All you need is a 64bit system, which means windows 7 will run it despite the store page saying the minimum requirement is windows 10.
This game is 3 games in 1. 1 is a walking around game kind of like monkey island. 1 is a turn based game kind of like the combat in darkest dungeon (without the party and difficulty). 1 is minigames like warioware. It unfortunately doesn't do any of them well enough to counteract the time wasted running around.
The basic loop is you run around and interact with everything the game wants you to, do minigames to make money to upgrade your stuff, then do 1 on 1 turn based battle, then repeat. It kept going like this at the point where I stopped playing which was somewhere between fight 5-10 so I don't know if it changes later.
You run around this game a LOT. It has a overworld map but each area has a beginning screen that takes a few seconds to run across to the main area and back. You have to do that so many times that it gets VERY tedious. There are a few secrets and a few events in them but 95% of the time you are just running through them just because.
The dialogue and text are ok but it's not good enough to counter the running around needed for them.
The minigames are just ok. Some just happens to be easier to make more money so I just stick with that until I'm fully upgraded. Typically takes about 5-10 attempts that last a few minutes each time.
The turn based combat is just ok as well. You have action points you use to move around in a linear line, attack, or perform some action. You move around to manipulate your and your opponent's attack range or to get a slight boost in attack in some spots.
You can slightly customize your mech but usually you just use 1 of 2 best part for each spot available at the time. Pilot actions follow a similar pattern but with a few more choices. Pilot actions vary in action point cost, damage, range, reload amount, armor, taunt to specific part, healing, etc.
To me, the game was ok and I probably could have finished it if it didn't have SO MUCH time wasted running around. If you can tolerate that, then it may be ok for you.
Great Setting
Great Story
Great Charakter
Great Voice Acting (literally every dialogue is voiced!)
Great Soundtrack
Great Visuals
Fun Mini Games
Thats everything what Wolfstride is and all it needs to be!
Wolfstride is all about it's over the top anime like story. You talk to character, read and listen to dialog and sometimes watch a cutscene. Inbetween these you will walk around little areas and play mini games to earn money, pineapples and parts for your mech. Mini games range from skill based, to quick time events and timing.
The Mech Fights are tactical turn based fights. The important Fights for story progression are probably the smallest part of Wolfstride, but you can have Mech Fights whenever you want to earn some extra cash an goodies.
These mechaniks create a nice gameplay loop, you shouldn't expect deep game mechanics tho.
Its a realy nice package and works great for me! I also love that you progress in (ingame) days, which allows you to have alot of control about how fast you want to progress and it also allows for short and long playing sessions. Playing for 30min to relax a bit? No problem just play a day or two. Want to Play for hours? No big deal eather. Just play as many days as you want.
