Retro-shooting and fast-paced arenas suit the Warhammer 40K setting nicely, but Boltgun falls short of greatness because its ideas peter out too quickly. Some good level design and nice environments make up for a lack of variety.

Great WH40k retro shooter

The design and atmosphere is great through the game, fast paced as it should be. You can feel the grimdark in every place in the game. More enemy variety would be nice, but still a great game. On Low difficulty it's still not totally forgiving, so you must be moving all time, on Exterminatus it can be a real challange. I have only one complain, sometimes you can be lost in a map, because some doors hard to find (but maybe it's my problem mostly)

Great fun.

I don't write reviews, so expect a ramble. Short version: It's very enjoyable. 5/5. Long ramble: Writing this after 3.5 hours of gameplay, that's around where I finished Chapter 1. It's more fun than the Old school Doom 1 & 2. It's like a good mashup of Doom 2016 with Doom 2 and Blood (the old game). I enjoy the arena like locations, where the area gets locked down until you kill all enemies in it. I play on hard (3rd out of 4 difficulties) and it just feels right for a veteran player. Each level feels different, enemies have great variety and guns are satisfying. What more do you need?

Just Fun

The game throws back to a childhood some people never had but it takes me back to Doom and Blake the really old shooters but with a few of the quality of life updates needed to make them work today.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun Review

Boomer shooters from indie developers have been very successful as of late and Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun might be just what the genre needs right now. This flashback FPS has you navigating hordes of Chaos cultists, mutants, and marines alike with a spectacular arsenal of weapons from the grimdark universe. It's a fantastic game for fans of the franchise and those seeking an adrenaline-filled journey through the grim future.

Well rounded doom in WH40K setting. Only reason for not giving it 5 stars is that it could've been so much more.
