Bartending is better than ever!
VA-11 Hall-A is essentially a visual novel experience, practically made by a handful of people, with the addition of a drink mixing minigame. It resembles mostly kinetic novels, which means, that there are no branching storylines based on choices (different succes at mixing and money management can result in different endings though). Cyberpunk usually means heavy topics, dystopian futuristic ideas, increasingly blurry border between man and machine and philosophical questions. The game is indeed touching upon these subjects, but thats about it. Its not the main focus of the game. This is not a nicely dressed philosophy essay. The main plotline is our protagonist's, Jill's everyday life. The encounters with her clients. as a bartender. And its a fun, often goofy, pleasant experience. The main strength of the game is its atmosphere. Seemingly everything is subservient to it, but thats absolutely a good thing. Despite being comfortable with using retro-esque cyberpunk as mostly just a setting, it delivers on the matching feeling without failure. The visuals and the music (especially the music!) both enhance these vibes, making a unique, unmatched game. Its futuristic, but retro at the same time. All in all, i loved playing through it, enjoyed every minute. I gave it 4 stars, only because I would have gladly expanded on the deeper, philosophical aspects of the plot and because the mixing minigame is rather easy. I would have gladly experienced trickier mixing techniques and/or more severe consequences. After finishing the game, I could not help but feel that there was more potential to it. But considering how this game was a passion-project of a small crew, they did a wondeful, truly great job! I would recommend it to anyone who likes (or at least is not affraid of) visual novels, anime-esque appearance and retro-feeling!
