Very Addictive

I usually don't enjoy turn based games, but this one has me very addicted. This game doesn't hold your hand like most game do. There are no mission markers, you have to get directions or find your own way to places, but I personally like that. Some of the gameplay mechanics are very deep, especially some of the tech crafting systems. I would recommend playing for an hour or two before starting a real play-through just to get an idea of what skills are most important to you. I also love the art style and the setting of this game, there's just something about it which makes me want to explore the world, and there is certainly lots to explore. It felt like I was still scratching the surface of this game after 50 hours. The music is also quite nice and helps set the atmosphere of different areas on the map. Some people have said the writing isn't great, but most characters do have quite a bit of depth and dialog, some of which is fairly humorous.

FO 1 & 2 but better

There isn't anything like FO 1 and 2 that I'm aware of. That's it for that genre. Those games were made a long time ago, they were awesome, now they're gone. The sequels after 1 and 2 just took on the same storyline but the gameplay is entirely different now, obviously. So for the longest time we had no options if we wanted to play more games like that. Now we have underrail, and it's really good. I don't write many reviews, but this is a game from a small developer that not a lot of people know about and I hope more people will buy it and experience it. I'm 20+ hours in now and cannot wait to get back to it once I'm done writing this review. I think the best way I can describe it is to just say that it really is FO 1 & 2 but better. Everything you liked about those games is here, but improved on. Story is great, atmosphere is great, combat is great, crafting, character customization, etc etc. It's great. Buy it. Share it.

The "Dark Souls" of CRPGs

Underrail seems to be a 1 or a 5 game, there is no in between. Need to say that the game is not a flawless masterpiece. It still has rough edges (looting for example), it has a very cryptic quest progression, player needs to do some research before starting the game and the game is sometimes unfair, and finally not to speak about the last area which is too demanding for a lot of builds. However despite these flaws or bad design decisions, it is still one of the best crpgs possibly ever made. The meat of the game is the character creation and development. Do your research before, not jump in it blindly coz the game will punish you. However if you understand the system, you can create a lot of different builds which will be viable and fun. There are just so many ways to play this game, and a good build is not necessarily a perfect build. It will have weaknesses, but the game gives you the tools to circumvent them. A lot of people replays this game because of the versatility of the character generation. Combat is straight forward, enemies are tough though. And they are same people like the player. They can be stealthy, ranged, melee, psy. If you build your character properly, you will beat them, if not there are possibilities that you simply cannot progress further and need to reroll. If you are constantly save-scumming it means your build is not up to the task and you need to restart becuase with a solid build you don't need to savescum. The other thing which I really liked was the setting and lore\story. It is unlike any other. It is cyberpunk with a mix of post-apocalyptic, sci-fi and horror. There are no big expositions, info-dumps, gamey big revalations. The player needs to gather the pieces from different sources, speaking to people, explore sites, reading journals ecc. Exploration is fantastic as well. Lastly the game is not inspired by the old Fallouts as people claim but more by earlier games like Wizardry, Ultimas ecc. that is why the high difficulty.

Scratches the Hardcore, Old-School Itch

Do you enjoy: 1. Many different possible character builds 2. Managing varied inventory 3. Weapons and Armor that Degrade 4. Challenging enemies that do not level with character 5. Plenty of dialogue, with stat checks 6. Crafting 7. Slower pace of play than most modern RPGs 8. Isometric Fallout/Wasteland games Love this style of game.

Worth checking out

A great modern take on a classic formula. Great atmosphere and visuals, amazing lore. Difficult at times, but rewarding.
