Doesn't really feel like ADOM..

The game itself is not bad, but it's a straight-downwards Dungeon crawler with an admittedly fairly good graphics interface... but that's about it. It's unfortunately nothing special, and nothing resembling ADOM's complexity. In fact, I'd say it's simpler than most modern roguelikes.... it's a throwback to NETHACK or Slash'Em in many ways, with some QoL improvements If I had to summarize it, it kind of feels like an Alpha... a tech demo to demonstrate some new gameplay concepts, but keeping it to a basic design of a few levels. Like I said, not bad, per se, just mediocre. And I do like the interface QoL improvments. But there are better options. If you want a more up to date beautified classic roguelike, I'd go for TOME (Tales of Maj Eyal).

Ultimate ADOM is not the sequel to Ancient Domains of Mystery. This, whatever it may be, bears the name, but nothing else of the long lived roguelike. This game, such as it can be called is mechanically shallow, half-finished, and completely abandoned by the developers. To illustrate how abandoned, the official website still has a link to a now defunct social media platform. They tried to find a middleroad between more casual players and the hardcore original players. They did not succeed.

As of version 1.0.01 it is unfinished and flawed

I have managed to finish two play-throughs and here are some criticisms about this game: At early levels the game is a bit frustrating and you die a lot until you understand how to build your character. Late in the game the difficulty drops to trivial. A mage can walk around spamming huge AOE spells that kill enemies and clear paths through walls, all this from a safe distance. You can also be immune to most effects and damage types and have insane resistances to the rest. It is ok to be able to become godlike in RPGs but the drop in difficulty is so sudden it becomes disappointing. Character development system is not tuned well enough. With each level up you get skill points that can only be used on specific skill groups and a few that you can use freely. Your class dictates which skill groups get dedicated skill points at each level up. The problem is you end up with lots of skill points that you can't use because you maxed out a skill group and lots of skills that you can't experiment with because they are not class skills. Speaking of skills... You will get access to a lot of them but you will end up using very few because most don't do anything significant (and some don't do anything at all). For instance summons will usually ignore your enemies unless your enemies attack them (which is rare). There are other skill that don't do anything noticeable visually or otherwise like "freeze ground". There are some nice skill combos like creating lava pits and using magical wind to push enemies inside but they are not worth the trouble at the level you gain access to them. Also there are skills that don't clearly describe how they work. Item-wise there is no crafting (although there seem to be references to material harvesting and such) apart from the ability to turn potions into poisons. Waste of resources as it is. You also get gold that you can't use for anything apart from burning it for XP, HP, or MP BUT whether you spend 1 gold or 1000 you still get the same amount. You also get a skill that supposedly lowers prices at shops but there are no shops. Exiting the dungeon either by finishing it or going to the entrance ends the game. To conclude, there are positive elements to the game for sure (I wouldn't have done 2 play-throughs otherwise), but, throwing more that a few hours into such an unfinished game is something I would not recommend.

The game is abandoned unfinished

Overall, this is a playable roguelike dungeon crawler with nice graphics. However, it has been released with multiple bugged features and the work on it seems to have stopped. There are, for example, achievements impossible to complete (Possessive, Deep Fried). Other do not work as intended (Sniper, Master of Magical Mayhem). Sadly, this seems to have been a fire-and-forget release.

unworthy successor

A coffee-break roguelike with many annoying qualities of a board game with an ADOM theme. Quality of the product is questionable at times - balancing is off (too punishing early game, too easy mid and lategame), UI is halfway between mouse and keyboard and controller. For me, this one is not a fun game. Very underwhelming.
