Labour of love

Looking at it purely as a remaster, I'm very impressed. As these are the original games underneath, I wasn't expecting much more than a texture upgrade. In fact, they have reworked the lighting, adding light sources as necessary to make the lighting logical. They've added a lot of 3D geometry for detail, e.g. vines and branches of trees and lamps to provide light. They also added some effects, such as subtle reflections on glass etc, some light fog. The cutscenes have animated faces now. The interpretation of the levels is excellent. The new lighting and added details make the levels look quite different in places, but they look how I imagine Core would've made them if they could've. There's some nice fixes, e.g. it has all the music intact despite being the PC version, the footstep sounds on the Maria Doria have been fixed, TR2's broken waterfall sounds have been fixed. TR1 has skyboxes, the braid, and the midair flips. It feels like they really 'got' the games, and did everything they could to express Core's original vision. I haven't seen everything in all three games yet of course, and I have no doubt there are imperfections in there, e.g. Floating Islands skybox. On the whole though, this basically fulfils my childhood dream of playing these games with the graphics from the FMVs. Please, for the love of god, do Last Revelation and Chronicles. Some other reviews have expressed some concerns: The EULA - I skimmed over it very fast and it did look bad, but these are worth the paper they're written on. Crystal's warning message - They didn't make the games, they didn't even make the remasters, and they'd be nothing without the franchise they appropriated from Core. And their contribution? To directly and explicitly call Core racists. They mad no-one likes nulara. Fine by me. "Modern" controls - work as well as you would expect (barely at all). As always for 28 years, ignore anyone criticising the controls, they should stick to Mario 64. Buy at full price.

Great fun! Problems Solved!

On the downside, game saves didn't work at first. Noticing only tomb123.exe needs to be in the root directory (w/o patch) solves various issues, including game saves and other minor glitches people mentioned. I don't use GoG Galaxy and didn’t need the patch. The game worked fine for me on Windows 10 but not Windows 7; people mentioned Windows 7 fixes but they don't work for me. FYI, the non-cloud game saves seem to be in %HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%\AppData\Roaming\TRX. Plus side! For me, the game is well worth it! The interface is smooth and consolidates the first three games and their bonus content nice and tight. The F1 key toggles between remastered and classic graphics (a nice touch) and runs at a steady 60fps in both modes (my monitor is 1920x1200 60Hz). The remaster of course is built on the skeleton of the old game so the gameplay dynamics are the same. The fun glitches, like easily jumping onto the roof of Croft Manor, are there too. The original 'Tank' (versus 'Modern') controls work best for me given the precise movement Lara needs to get through levels. The remastered graphics are beautiful, with thoughtful additions. The training level for TR 1 shows a book on Vilcabamba in Lara's window seat: that's where she goes in Peru! Croft Manor is decorated with master paintings like 'Girl with a Pearl Earring' by Vermeer and Jan van Eyck's self portrait, to name a few. In camera mode (F3) you can zoom in and see Lara's manicured finger- and toenails. Lara's hands spread open right before she grabs a ledge. You can see her breath in cold climates. The lighting changes in the remastered graphics add a different mood than the original. It's nice to hear the full soundtracks in-game too. All-in-all, I appreciate the scope of this remaster, and hope it allows new players to discover all the fun Tomb Raider offers.

Modern controls do not work

I was hoping to play these classic TR games with the Modern controls, which I read on the developer's website are the Tomb Raider Legend controls. Unfortunately they are not the same. Target lock-on frequently breaks, there is no side-step or back-step, and I couldn't get side-flip or swan dive to work like in Legend. Training course in TR2 cannot be completed since you cannot hold a gun, and that is required for the side-flip. I think the developers of Tomb Raider Anniversary had the right idea instead; if you are going to put modern controls in an old game, the old game must be recreated to implement the modern controls properly. A big thank you to GOG for refunding my purchase quickly and hassle-free. Very much appreciated.

Modern controls are broken

Firstly, huge classic TR fan going on two decades. I can soar with the tank controls. Everything goes great with the modern controls (after googling all of the unintuitive mappings that should have been supplied in a tutorial or at least a digital manual), until you start trying to swim. She only moves in water using the left analog stick and the angle is completely dependent on the camera angle, and the camera stops responding or "gets stuck" on a wall in tight areas of which there are many. Meaning Lara just runs into a wall and drowns because you can't move the camera. Sometimes you can press the right analog stick to go into "look" mode and then press it again to reset the camera angle somewhat, but it does not always help. Additionally, when you are climbing up ledges, it is as if the analog stick is interpreting only four directions. It is unpredictable as to which direction you will have to press to climb upward, which was never a problem in TR LAU. The classic graphics are the PC version graphics with no filtering. There's no graphics options for either classic/modern graphics, so you get what you get. This remaster needed more time to bake. I suppose that's just the way games get released nowadays.

Exactly what it says on the tin.

This is a 1:1 remaster of the original games. The gameplay hasn't been altered. The original games used a default style tank control scheme. Objects sometimes pop in and out of existence based on where the camera was when the object is being rendered. That's normal, it's how the original engine functions. If you're looking for a remake, hit up Tomb Raider Anniversary (my favorite tbh). Gameplay: 10/10 Exploration is fun. Being able to swap between original and remastered views is cool. Remastered graphics employ shaders, fog, vast improvements to vegetation and set pieces. As an added bonus, some areas, like a long well-lit and bland tunnel in the original becomes a moody dark and foreboding area with the remastered graphics. Controls: 10/10 Controls either the original tank controls (default) or modern which makes the game play somewhat more like Soul Reaver. Still going to feel janky, but everything was preserved, which is the point. Sound: 10/10 Still creepy, doesn't flood you with music/sound effects. If something near you makes a sound, you hear it. Otherwise you'll be starved for sounds... which is the point. The feeling of isolation in a remote area. The lack of tons of extra sounds, usually with you just hearing only the sounds you make, enhances the environment and awareness of it. You're not half asleep and looking out the window on a car ride with the folks listening to your iPod. You're in a place where you need to pay attention. Sound can indicate enemies, running water and so on. Graphics: 10/10 Graphics are exactly like they should be for a remaster and honestly look amazing. Some of the ways they enhanced the graphics even cause me to use more caution when approaching an area simply because the environment is more immersive. As an added bonus, Lara's ponytail exists in the first game. I hope they also give the same treatment to The Last Revelation, or at the very least make it a DLC as that's my favorite of the classic games.
