A graphic novel of survival stories.
When I first saw this title, I was browsing in GoG for some downtime entertainment. I recalled seeing the title and it hit me once again that this was more then the usual action/war-theme game. At first it looked "dark" and I left it at that. After I made the purchased, I actually left it alone for over a month--I did not want to touch it. I actually thought it has moral education value on life, liberty, and being grateful. All that was accomplished after surviving two 80 days, and a short-lived 20 days experiences. Before I continue, I want to express that if one seeks the usual action genre wrapped in the disguise of a survival theme. This isn't that kind of "game". It is an experience that when played through an 80 days, moderate crime/violence level, a moderate winter that comes late and last moderately long survival experience will lead you to appreciate the depth and work put in by 11 Bit Studios. They did their work, and the message was felt--it hurts. It hurts that although I had a grasp of both game mechanics (combat and resource management, latter comprise of both physical and psychoemotional aspect), there is simply no winning like our typical war game. My group did survive since it was not my first rodeo with an 80 day campaign (look at that, using that word campaign reminded how Call Of Duty'ed out I am). In the end, they all survived, but just not what one would expect after getting into minimal confrontations that resulted in the use of fatal force, stealing from the defenseless, neglecting needs of neighbors, and holding onto resource beyond survival needs. If it has to be viewed as a game, then a hard game I will call it; however, if it is approached as an experience, it will open up your eyes. I will leave it at that. The old saying that "pain is unavoidable, but suffering, is optional" may helped me to over come the first week. After I came across people asking for help; yet, I barely had enough resource to help my own group. Then and there, it hit me: it wasn't about my group, my goals, and I; rather, it was about surviving it all, together. I consider myself as a humble person, who jokes and laughs, and yes, like Call of Duty style games (once in a while, finished COD MW 1 and 2, sad that Soap died). This War of Mine had more to offer then what meets the eye. As a pure game, the graphic depiction of 256 shades of grey and fine guitar, and often classical music we can recall (if one was build to enjoy), along with its thrills in stealth combat element that made it is a complete package. See it differently though as a directable graphic novel, where fate of each character chosen and decisions made for them may have us felt morally responsible for how they turned out--something politicians need to play before they plunge people and nations in war. In anyway, give this an honest try. Select a 20 day experience and do your best. Once the basic elements are understood, go for the 80 days and give it a second go.
