Having received training from an enigmatic organization known as the Keepers, Garrett leaves the order and goes back to the life of a thief on the streets of the City. Once you enter the underworld you have to deal with all the consequences - you are not the only one out there looking for decent loot. Hide in the shadows of the dark, savage city. Sneak into old ruins, haunted cathedrals and mansions of the rich. Incapacitate your enemies quietly or in an open fight. This unique sneak-em-up game provides you with a range of means to achieve your goal. Remember though - secrecy is your best friend.
THIEF™ GOLD is a first-person perspective stealth game. It was the first game to use light and sound gameplay mechanics – different surfaces cause varying noise (for example carpets are quiet and ceramic tiles are very loud). You can use sound to your advantage - it’s not only your main source of information on how close your enemies are but you can use it to distract them, for example by throwing objects. With unscripted levels, and objectives and paths altered based on difficulty settings, THIEF™ GOLD can give you hours of non-repetitive gameplay.

Ecstatic that this is finally here. Thank you times one hundred. However, half of Thief is the story, which has seemingly been left out by not including the cutscenes. The scenes are masterful and absolutely necessary. What gives?
Yeah, this is my favorite game of all-time. Extremely tense gameplay and a slowly evolving plot that elevates the stakes to gargantuan levels. Such a vivid world is created here, with very impressive richness and depth. This game is a masterpiece. Time Magazine named it one of the 100 Greatest Video Games of All-Time. An immensely deserved accolade.
This is, more or less, the fantasy successor to System Shock. While it is mission based rather than constant, Thief shines because of a detailed world, suspenseful gameplay, a strong story, and fantastic art direction.
I had my doubts about this game ever accepting newer versions of Windows. I've spent years buying Gold versions on CD to replace my old original version of this game, and trying to fiddle around with fixes, patches and hacks. Everything I could find to make this golden oldy back to life. It seems a wizard is hiding out behind the scenes at gog.com. I have just completed the tutorial of Thief and it works perfectly. The sound, graphics and cut scenes. And on Win7 64bit to boot. Bravo!
The game takes place in a Steampunk inspired world that have both magic and technology, but both in a primitive way. You play as the thief Garrett, who is sort of like Robin Hood. You steal from the rich and have no qualms about subduing hired guards. The innocent, like servents, pets or even the lady of the house, is another matter. Never harm the defenseless.
During your... Nightly activities you come across a woman who hires you to steal a magic sword for her. Nice, easy and quickly done, for someone of your talents... Right?
Buy this game for the story and the awesome way it makes you feel when your "working." Them drunken guards wont know what... snuck past them.
This is a game that demands your time and focus. Levels are massive, extremely detailed, and dark. The added missions in this version are quite good and help balance out a game that has a heaveir supernatural element to it than its predecessor.
Yep, It's a stealth game. It's not hard to know what that means. I'm sure you've at least played somewhat of a stealth game, as there are many good ones out there. And many different kinds of stealth games. The cool thing about Theif, is that it is all in the First Person, and it really makes you feel like you are THERE. You are in the shadows lurking through the halls of a medieval-steampunk castle, avoiding grumpy, angry, and sometimes drunk crusty medieval-steampunk guards.
Along the way, you find loot, but you also find lots of notes that not only give you hints about where to go, what to do, but also enchance and deepen the story of the game, which is so darkly un-sentimental, gritty, and at times, terrifying, that you will forget that you live in 2013 and there is no such think as a Gas Arrow.
It's a great game. It has it flaws, but the development team had no idea how the zombies were going to be received so we can't fault them for that. They made the corrections, and put them in Theif II, which has you sneaking around humans mostly. Play this first though. Have a taffing good time, and don't quit playing at the haunted cathedral.
