Thea: The Awakening, with Return of the Giants DLC, is a turn-based strategic survival game steeped in Slavic myth and monstrosity set after an apocalyptic force known only as The Darkness has engulfed the world. There are Strigas and Baba Yagas aplenty, but there are no heroes, no monster slayers, and no great armies capable of banishing them. You have only a few hopeless and starving survivors who are desperately trying to stay alive. You are their last and only true hope!
The game combines turn-based strategic gameplay with the tension and grit of a rogue-like, a captivating story you can uncover through a series of in-game events, and a unique combat system based on a complex card battle game.
The wide range of gameplay features allows you to proceed through the world of Thea the way you prefer. You can choose to stay in your village and build up defenses, or you can go out and explore the world. Conflicts can be resolved through assassination, stealth, diplomacy, hunting, and various other ways depending on the skills your people possess. Fighting is not your only solution to conflict!

Thea does almost everything decently, but its flaws hold each of its parts back from being great. The one undeniable success in the game is the top tier story and worldbuilding that makes the game worth your time if you can get past the flaws.

Fish bigosz, clay swords, silver forge
Thea is a unique blend of flavor. The gameplay have 3 parts: - turn based survival village and ressource management, which is at start a bit hard to read, but make sense after a while. You collect ressource with people mainly outside your village, you bring them back, and transform them with other people into food, building, equiment. What I personnally really like is that it is never mandatory to have a specific ressource to progress further, for instance, if you don't have wood, you can build a forge out of stone and silver, and it will have different properties, which is very nice. And there is a nice reward loop which give you research points (to unlock new recipes) when you craft stuff with rare materials, which motivate to not hoards them for perfect craft. Oh yes, and you cannot build a second village. - the fight system with cards, some hate it, some love it, which is at start also weird and requires accoutumance and to read some pages to understand how you get skills for your fighters. You have 2 piles of cards, fight and support, which are randomly selected. You organize yourself against the card of the enemy, and decide who will go first, take damage, or support by buffing you or debuffing the other. It have the advantage to go fast, even against strong monster, and you have also some alternative form of "fight" (for instance persuation), which use the same mechanics but with different stats of character. The game is quite unforgiving here, and loosing people is part of the experience. Note your characters level up are done at random, and XP progress is shared, which may be disturbing for some. - Events which describe the lore with some inegal (good to average) flavor pictures, and requires some decision to be made sometimes. The lore is slavic inspired and crafted very well, sometimes with explanation about what is waht, for instance a rat witch is a woman which comited suicide before her wedding. It takes even better if you have visited one or two museum in poland. It allows you also to convince weird creatures to join your cause, which is quite refresshing. The game is quite unforgiving, and hard to read, and a first run is maybe 30-40 hours. In my 1st run I simply loose 80% of my people before turn 20, in my 3rd I simply loose my main fighting troup against a boss. Still it gave me great memories, and I enjoyed cooking Bigosz. Not for you if you don't like: - slow games - low graphic games - being insignificant in front of the wrong monster - loosing almost everyone for a stupid/unclear reason - bad RNG feeling (I insist that it's a feeling) - simple city management/crafting - villager placement - slow progress (1 complere run may unlock 1 or 2 passive skill for future run) You will like if you enjoy: - narrative gameplay - feeling of having an army of dirt-eating peasant - cooking pierogi and bigosz - blend of genre - going forward after a failure

The game which left the warm feeling in my heart and from time to time i keep returning to it to play it again This game is for you If you like: - slavic mythology setting - interesting mechanics (crafting, battle, quests) - interesting progression and unlocking "Gods" which you villagers can follow - each God is based on mythology and has multiple levels of perks that are unlocked by "point" that you gather from game to game - different playstyles that you can choose ( warrior, crafter, etc.) - card battle with nice art - interesting quests, and it is lots of them - several endings that depend on your choice, - challenging difficulties - lots of weapons, armors, etc - all with descriptions and "lore history" - in game guide and tutorial - very polished art and music - its really seen that people really put their soul when making this masterpiece! I recommend always play at once on "hard difficulty" with no saves i.e. "ironman" mode - this is how you truly will feel this game and consequences of your choices! Likely you will loose again and again but as you become better you will get more and more taste of it! If you like turn based games with cool lore, old-style, polished thematic art and music, place to think and act - buy this game. I dont know whether GOG version is working fine ! as people report that it might not be working and not supported, i have this game from other source - I HAVE BAUGHT IT HERE TO SUPPORT DEVELOPERS and GOG!! Make sure you have version with "Return of the Giants" DLC . Also if you have friend - there is multiplayer version (unfortunately its for sure not GOG version) , also there is free "Story Bundle" DLC which adds lots of new quests!! Overall i recommend to find game with all that DLCs! Actually developers are not "dead" and are currently launching another game which is "follow-up" for Thea but in different setting - check it out! Hope this helps and good luck in your journey across Thea!

Great game!
I liked the story and the gameplay a lot. I don't really care for unlock mechanics in games like this but it was easy to play with everything unlocked.

MUST HAVE!
Awesome game, fresh look on strategy. The world has the tendency to make You consider every step if You are not familiar with the lore making the world a dark place. Every turn is a matter of surviving and You will end up preying every time Your people are wounded in hope they won't die;)
