Thea: The Awakening, with Return of the Giants DLC, is a turn-based strategic survival game steeped in Slavic myth and monstrosity set after an apocalyptic force known only as The Darkness has engulfed the world. There are Strigas and Baba Yagas aplenty, but there are no heroes, no monster slayers, and no great armies capable of banishing them. You have only a few hopeless and starving survivors who are desperately trying to stay alive. You are their last and only true hope!
The game combines turn-based strategic gameplay with the tension and grit of a rogue-like, a captivating story you can uncover through a series of in-game events, and a unique combat system based on a complex card battle game.
The wide range of gameplay features allows you to proceed through the world of Thea the way you prefer. You can choose to stay in your village and build up defenses, or you can go out and explore the world. Conflicts can be resolved through assassination, stealth, diplomacy, hunting, and various other ways depending on the skills your people possess. Fighting is not your only solution to conflict!

Thea does almost everything decently, but its flaws hold each of its parts back from being great. The one undeniable success in the game is the top tier story and worldbuilding that makes the game worth your time if you can get past the flaws.

Good game
I know the sequel just came out, but I got the first version on sale here at Gog. Lots of inventory and crafting elements. I find myself really engaged. The card-based conflict resolution Takes only a little time to grasp. A good Let's Play may help. Now I find it easy. Playing on easy difficulty for my first playthrough and enjoying exploring the exploration, stories, outfitting, and crafting. Recommended.

Kinda pretty but infuriating at first..
Basically Heroes of Might & Magic, with a survival element, resource gathering, camping to heal, and a whole lot of 'Top trumps' thrown in sound silly but once you realise its H M & M it makes the game more enjoyable and less frustrating.

Rare but overrelying on its gameplay
Thea the awekening is a nice take on the 4x strategic genre: the game manages to implement a card mechanic into its system that covers not only battle but other activities as well. Other than that, I must admit I found the game a little too.... basic. Among the other ''managerial'' games I played, Thea falls short: the entirety of the premises, the way the game deals with resources collection and other features.. are not bad, but not great either. So, is it a yes or no? it's a meh. If you are an hard core fan of the genre, or looking for something different, give it a try. If not.. well, you can still play, but don't expect a masterpiece.
