Unreal Tournament meets Hexen
While at first you are invited to an intricate story, based on the Jordan books, after a few, very good levels, capturing the mood, the game eventually turns more and more into a level-by-level arena shooter style FPS with magic bullets. It is more "Action" than "Adventure". Even though, the story and characters were interesting. This game was made with the Unreal engine of the 1999 UT era. And too often, it feels like it. Like 'Fantasy Unreal Tournament Bot matches'. One aspect of the game is 'defending' areas. In your magic arsenal you have traps you will use and 'illusions' to cast. I remember, one of the selling features before release was "we hired a real architect, to help us create the castle levels and design". It was nothing special, but still well done. Especially the early Shadar Logoth level is really nice and moody. Nonetheless, this game is well worth playing today, without the nostalgia goggles. Once, at least. I highly recommend the Glide(nGlide) version over the DirectX API. Glide has 'moving clouds' for example, instead a static skybox and just looks nicer, overall. This NightDive version on GOG tweaked the game to run out-of-the-box on modern systems, so you do not have to fiddle with settings yourself, even though my CD-version still runs fine.
