Excellent fantasy FPS

Unlike Heretic or Hexen, where the weaapons were just wand versions of Doom guns, in WoT your spells have various effects, for offence, protection and various utility. You have things like tracking attacks and debuffs at your disposal, giving you the opportunity to feel like a real magic user. The enemies you face have advanced AI. They dodge attacks, like the Skar'j in Unreal or utilise special abilities, like reflecting attacks or invisibility, for instance. They can be irritating, but very satisfying to defeat. The levels have interesting environmental challanges, not just button/door or hidden object puzzles like Hexen 1/2 used to. A challenging trap maze recalls a similar section in Arx Fatalis. There are also quasi-tower defence sections where you set traps, not used to their full potential, but they seem to predict the excellent Orcs Must Die! games. The graphical style is very crisp and recalls both Unreal and Thief TDP to a degree. Controls feel snappy and natural to every veteran of FPS games of the era. Nightdive did the porting job to their usual very high standard. The devs Legend Ent. used to make adventure games and with this experience they crafted an above-avarage plot. The villains are mysogynistic and treachorous, making the player feel righteous in the struggle, with a surprisingly good folk-rock soundtrack playing in the backgroud. Overall, I consider this a forgotten gem and recommend it for all those raised on early full-3d classics like Unreal, Thief and Half-Life.

Truly surprised me!

The wheel of time is one of those game that I didn't knew anything about ( as I didn't knew about its source material either, if not for the new tv series) and still managed to blow my mind away. Sure, the game has some little cracks and other problems (like the hard difficulty, chosen for my first run and finish, but I believe the game was developed more for normal difficulty), but other than this it's gorgeous! As a fps, The wheel of time is simple and yet creative: the powers that you can wield are interesting, both straight-forward and not so straight-forward. Plus, level design, albeit not perfect, is actually pretty enjoyable and gets the job done. Welp, story is basically a spin off of the books, buuuut I must admit that, although in some part is a little too simple, is entertaining and in other parts is actually great ( really enjoyed it) and with some pretty good twists. So, as a representative of the 90-2000' shooter era, ( that weird moment of transition that gave us Deus ex and other masterpieces) all I say is: although the wheel of time always spin, this game is truly... timeless (YUCK).

WoT: one of the most slept on games ever

Wheel of Time is one of the most unique first-person-shooters ever made. The weapon system combining offensive & defensive weaponry has still never been matched to this day. Unreal, Deus Ex, Quake - none of them offer the experience that WoT does. The skill ceiling of these games also cannot touch WoT's ceiling. It is a very difficult game, but improving at it is extremely rewarding. As you improve, the fights begin to be more like a dance, as players determine which weapons are the best to both attack the opponent, while also considering the best way to defend incoming attacks. It has some of the more intricate duels in a fps, possibly the most intricate (admittedly until someone pulls out the Balefire!). Multiplayer Citadel (WoT's version of capture the flag) is an experience this is unmatched in any game - this is not hyperbole. Placing traps before the game starts is a revolutionary idea - no other game has ever done it to my knowledge. This allows players to customize their defenses to cater to their specific spot for the seals (flags). The seals themselves can then be picked up and moved anywhere in the map, which is also unique to WoT. It is very clear that some of the lower star reviews here even did not play anything other than the Single Player. Comments calling the game a Quake clone or saying people "didn't continue to play WoT" is just incorrect. WoT was criminally under advertised and the number of copies sold reflects this. Yet despite the lower initial numbers, WoT continues to have a strong following even today. A diehard community is here - don't let these other reviews convince you otherwise. It's hard to read some of these reviews and consider them genuine. It would seem some just have a bone to pick or just want to be "different" but the problem is they're just not correctly depicting the entirety of WoT and what it brings to the table. If you want to play a unique first-person-shooter online, WoT is the game. There's nothing else like it.

Almost great

Nightdive Studios did a pretty good job on this version. Direct3D looks good and can be run in widescreen resolutions, although the UI does not scale and thus becomes almost invisible at higher resolutions. Glide support is provided through nGlide, which looks slightly better but the UI will be stretched in widescreen. Both Direct3D and Glide run well for the most part, aside from some odd spots where FPS tank for no apparent reason. Developed by Legend Entertainment, who did the excellent Unreal add-on Return to Na Pali before, The Wheel of Time is best described as an FPS with spells instead of guns. Only some of the spells are directly offensive, while others enable one to levitate, shift through solid matter, or swap places with an enemy, which are typically used to solve the puzzles. There are also several defensive spells, which become important when fighting other spell users. These almost play like an FPS version of mage duels in Baldur's Gate, with certain protections canceling others. Outside of these magic duels, the combat is rather stale, however, as for the most part, only three or four offensive spells are typically used. The player is also forced to mix things up as ammunition is strictly limited. Visually, the game is a feast. At times, I felt like I was playing an Unreal mod, but that's not a bad thing. There is something about the lighting in the first Unreal engine that makes games built on it still look surprisingly good. The level design is very linear for the most part, but occasionally there are more open spaces that reward exploration. The biggest issue I have with the game is how much it relies on quicksaving. WoT isn't particularly challenging, but against some enemies, encounters can go horribly wrong very quickly, so restarting those is often a necessity. If it weren't for the frequent reloading, the game could be beaten in less than five hours. Still, if you don't mind this type of design, The Wheel of Time is well worth playing.
