Walking in an Alien Wonderland

A walking sim is only as good as its vibes and storytelling. On the vibes front, the Invincible is stellar. The graphics and art direction are top-notch. It goes all in on 1950s-style sci-fi aesthetics with ray guns and flying saucers. You really do get the sense of traveling through a mysterious, barren, and alien landscape. On the story front, it's fine. The characters, aided by solid voice acting, are compelling. The story explores some neat sci-fi ideas. While the story is strictly linear, you are given some choices to change the narrative. Some plot points landed a bit flat, however, particularly what was supposed to be the "big plot twist'. Performance-wise, it varies. In some sections, I noticed considerable lag and stuttering even with lower graphics settings. It wasn't game-breaking for me, but your mileage may vary. If you're not a fan of walking sims, this one won't change your mind. If you adjust your expectations, however, you'll find an enjoyable walk through an alien wonderland.

Great retro-SF walking simulator, very well transporting the atmosphere of the book.

A good novel, not an adventure game

For whatever reason, I thought I bought a survival game. It is sort of a survival game, but not the type where you shepard your resources and use your wits to solve problems. This is a graphic novel of one of Stanislaw Lem's books. As a novel, it is pretty interesting. I quite like the stripped down art style and absolutely love the raypunk/atompunk asthetic (akin to Fallout). If you want a story brought to "life," this one is for you. It's not an open ended surval game.

Lackluster game, avoid

Gameplay: The game is a walking simulator focusing on the narrative. Meaning the gameplay is supposed to be bare bones. Interestingly enough the walking in this game is incredibly clunky which makes no sense given its the only core mechanic they had to test the gameplay of. There are also buttons and such you must press. Some of these buttons can softlock the game so you have to load a previous save. With such a bare amount of gameplay that doesnt work properly is not acceptable. Story: The game has an interesting story but with lackluster endings and execution. They all end with no resolution and not even with an ending cinematic, just an abrupt ending to all of them (at least the 4 endings I did). Your choices can affect the story, but it with the endings being so abrupt it feels unsatisfying. Voice acting ranges from solid to poor. Some drama set pieces are also on the level of the TV show "Lost" so just nonsensical. Performance: Bad performance all around. Worse in larger areas. Game runs natively at 90 FOV, any higher and it becomes experimental (says so in the settings themselves). Concluding Notes: I was personally hyped for the game so when it was 45% off I thought I was getting a good deal. Unfortanetly not. I can see that the game has passion behind from the art and music team but other than that it falls flat. You can safely avoid buying the game as you wont miss out on much.

Overrated janky shallow disappointment

This game is SO OVERRATED. First I thought old-skool Sci-fi themed Firewatch type game, what could ever go wrong? This should be exactly my cup of tea! It's not, it's an amateurish attempt to be something it's not. Very undelivered. The highest point of this game are audiovisuals that become very repetitive over time anyway but you can't properly immerse yourself in this world because the controls and UI is extremely janky. I've been switching between KB+mouse and controller and could decide which is worse. You can disable UI hints but the game is barely playable even with the pointers enabled. And the storytelling is just pure sluggish boredom of nothingness presented with equally uninspiring voiceover - all of it very very unfitting for the old-skool raypunk era sci-fi. Doesn't read or sound anything remotely similar to first Star Trek or similar. The overall experience is very comparable to slow "horror" love tunnel rides at amusement park with embarrassing cardboard mannequins and slow robotical menaces trying to spook you.
