I grew up playing these games...
They're...not very good. Just being straight up with you. They're archaic, brutal adventure games with text input, lacking the polish of similar early Sierra games. Do they hold a special place in my heart? Hell yes. When I was a kid I was enamored with Hugo because I didn't have a computer at the time. These kinds of games were totally foreign to me, and exciting, and the only way I could play them was going to my neighbor's house across the street.
Would I recommend them to someone now? Of course not! Come on, people. If you're going to recommend an old school text-based adventure game, recommend Space Quest, Police Quest, Kings Quest, Quest For Glory, Leisure Suit Larry, etc. instead. Don't let the nostalgia blind you into thinking these are great games.
