The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Upgrade
I was told by a BGS employee, when I shared my happiness on GOG version, the following : "Although the CK can't work with the GOG version, so if you want to mod you'll need to use Steam. The GOG version should generally be fine for using mods, just not making them".
So those, who aim to make mods which require Creation Kit , unfortunately might need to reconsider.
Skyrim is often memed for its re-releases but let's be honest... this game is more than worth playing, no matter what. Because of the character limit, however, I have to be a bit brief.
If you've never played Skyrim or an Elder Scrolls game before, imagine this: you complete an introductory quest that sets up the world and your character, and then you're released to do whatever you want. When I say "whatever", I mean it: the TES series is notorious for its unparalleled freedom to play how you want. The unofficial motto of the series is "live another life in another world" and that's spot on. Skyrim takes that freedom to new heights and it does so in a deeply intriguing, beautiful fantasy world inspired by ancient Norse/Viking culture. With a classless skill system, this game really does unleash your potential to do whatever you like with the game world, whether you want to follow the epic main quest, join a guild, roam the world as a freelancer or even set up a family and live as a tradesman; you are literally without limits.
With the Special Edition, the now eleven year old game got a significant facelift, with better lighting & shaders and performance upgrades. More than that, though, it added cross-platform mod support through an in-game mod manager. It also received the much-maligned (unfairly, I might add) feature called Creation Club, wherein Bethesda partners with prominent modders to release official micro-DLCs to keep the game alive long-term.
The Anniversary Edition upgrade, however, is where it's at. To celebrate the game's decade milestone last year, Bethesda released this upgrade so that players could get all of those Creation Club micro-DLCs in one purchase. As such, the Anniversary Edition is THE way to play the game as it adds so much more content on top of the base game and its three major DLCs. To top it off, it's now DRM-free, truly making it the final boss of Skyrim releases!
Buy it ASAP if you enjoy open worlds and RPGs!
This was an impulse purchase. I already have the game on steam. I also have the AE update on Steam and got it again on GoG.
The game will show as Special Edition in your library, but the AE update is a DLC that will get you all the CC content.
After nearly 11 years, what more can be said of this game? Well, actually quite a bit. We now have the addition of 74 pieces of amazing Creation Club content, additional quests, slight graphical overhauls and performance tweaks, and the ability to mod and use mods. This game was amazing in 2011 and still holds up in 2022. Even if you played the non-special edition, I recommend this purchase as it adds quality of life features such as fishing, farming, new residences, creatures, etc. Even at full price, this is a must have, epic collection
In summary, this is a welcomed and long overdue addition to the GOG catalogue. Do yourself a favor and get it while the getting is good.
I just want to confirm that mods are working. I've read a lot of comments here that have scored down the game and left negative review because they think mods don't work. This is just not true. I've been testing it for the past few days and most of the popular mods (Unofficial Skyrim Patch, SkyUI, SMIM, Climates of Tamriel, A Noble Skyrim - 2K Texture Pack, Achievements Mods Enabbler, Immersive Citizens, etc.) work. I used the latest version (1.8.3) of Vortex Mod Manager for testing. Hope it helps and have fun with one of the best games in history!
