A perfect successor to Obra Dinn

Return of the Obra Dinn was one of those games that blew me away, but for years it seemed like no one would ever make a detective game that could possibly compare. Since then, I have played a lot of detective games, and none of them have even come close to Obra Dinn - until Case of the Golden Idol. It is nigh on perfect - 10/10 - 100%. Unlike lesser detective games, the cases are watertight - I never felt frustrated or held back by stupid logic or unclear ideas. The red herrings are believable and when you realise you've been misled, it's a charming feeling of surprise rather than feeling cheated. There are too many "a-ha!" moments to count when you take another look over the evidence and realise you had it all wrong. Even the hint system is great fun and doesn't really take any of the joy out of solving the puzzle yourself. The plot, too, is engrossing - the cast of characters is colourful and well-written, and it's great fun to see the machinations of the various groups involved play out across many years. It can seem a bit hard to follow at times, but all the clues are there and I had a great moment when I finally realised what was happening. The art has a great deal of 90s adventure game charm - the music is nearly up there with the Obra Dinn soundtrack. I thoroughly enjoyed every one of the cases and I hope there is more to come!

Fun story

This is a pretty fun game and a neat way to tell a story. Instead of telling you what happened, you get to investigate an instant in time, and deduce what happened by examining clues. Fun visuals, the puzzles were all straightforward and made sense, didn't have any issues with bugs. The one concern I'd have is the price point vs. the length, the game took me about 5 hours to 100%, so if money is tight, you might want to wait for a sale. Ignoring that, though, I definitely had a fun time with this.

Excellent detective game, co-op friendly

Played through this with my wife and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. The clever clue tracking system and an interesting well-developed overall story really kept us engaged and the game never wore out its welcome. Didn't run into any bugs in our play through so the only negative would be the overall game length. The experience was well worth the cost of admission for us though. Please make a sequel (and another, then another) in the same mold!

Excellent story and gameplay

I tried the demo on Steam and I didn't get it at first, but when I saw the comparisons to Obra Dinn by other reviewers, I gave it another go, quickly fell in love with it and couldn't stop playing until I'd completed it. The art style turned me off a bit at first, but I soon warmed up to it. The story is great, and the puzzles make perfect sense, at least in hindsight! The greatest difficulty is when you convince yourself the story must have played out one way, but you get it wrong and you have to rethink everything. It took me ten hours to complete with no hints, and I enjoyed every minute of it! This is a must play if you enjoy deduction and logic puzzles, and definitely if you enjoyed Obra Dinn. I hope this genre takes off, as I'd love to see more games like this.

Nice mystery

A great mystery similar to Obra Dinn where you figure out what is happening in a particular scene before filling in the blanks. There were a couple parts I found a bit frustrating because I didn't want to use any hints, otherwise the clues present certainly had me focused on piecing things together.
