Oregon Trail...with Vikings!
So...basically I liked this game, I didn't *love* it. It's essentially Oregon trail. Random events happen in the caravan(s) you're leading, and choices pop up on screen. You don't really have a choice of where you go, as the story line is leading you, but there's an extensive and interesting map....why? Some of your choices mean or do nothing, and some of them have consequences you won't get until much later in the game. The fighting was relatively difficult from the start, which isn't the worst, but when you can't save at will it becomes tedious. There aren't clear "good guy" and "bad guy" paths, I suppose that's realistic, but I would've liked to be able to understand and choose more clearly. You can't hunt for food which seems like a real miss to me. You're all soldiers and giants wandering through the (admittedly dangerous) woods and you can't go hunt for supplies? SMH... Some characters die with consequences, some seem like they got killed but really didn't, and some die with no option to save them. Sometimes a death/strength drain, in combat, kills someone and ends the game, sometimes they're just fine once combat ends, whether you won or not. The lack of consistency is irritating. I love games with a good back story, but it should be integrated into the game, I shouldn't have to go read something to get a sense of place and urgency. I wish there was more voice acting, it's pretty minimal. There were a couple buggy parts, in dialog and game play. The most interesting parts of the game come towards the end, aren't explained very well, and don't really come to a satisfying conclusion, in my opinion. I would almost liken this game to playing a prequel, based on a trilogy I never got to read. All that being said, the artwork was gorgeous if rather static and in some parts repetitive. I hope Stoic makes an upgraded sequel so I feel more like I'm playing a cohesive game rather than being dragged around and forced into choices without comprehension

Worthy, but I felt it a bit flat
I will start by saying that I think buying this game was a good idea, and I am happy to have tried it. That said, I didn't finish it, because basically the game mechanics ended up feeling tedious to me (I completed 3-4 chapters). I was very appealed by this game because I love story driven games and I don't mind strong graphics or effects. In that aspect, this game is a win; it has a lot of personality, it is highly aesthetic and is made with care. It has a good story and characters, implemented fundamentally through voiceless dialogs (there are no video scenes or that kind of thing). However, it is immersive and effectively creates an atmosphere that helps you live the story. The game is played in three different modes: 1) The dialogs. The focus changes from character to character in a movie-like style that helps make the dialogs a bit more dynamic, because beyond that it is reading and clicking your dialog choices. 2) The traveling. You and your company travel across the beautiful and immersive landscapes, and meanwhile different events occur in the form of dialogs (see before) and combats (see below). 3) The combat. Turn based. It was really my first time with this kind of combat system, and I loved it. It feels relaxing (sometimes combat can be stressful in games!) and it is still challenging and makes you feel you have to make an effort to win. It is simple enough that you can get it without having to study, and complex enough that you really have to take care of your actions and have an actual strategy. That said, I am not a good strategist, and I still enjoyed the combat and win my way through it. PROS: -It is a unique game in the way it is built, in its aesthetic, and its setting. It is charming and feels really refreshing. -The story is good and engaging. You really want to continue knowing what happens. -(The strongest point) Your decisions MATTER. They do, and you really feel it. I ended up being taking some time to think some decisions before making a choice haha It is really good in that, so if you like that, definitely it is for you. CONS: -The mechanics are simple, so good as the story might be, there is the risk that it becomes tedious. That is the reason I quit it and moved to other game. However, it is not bad as to not want to come back to it. Who knows, maybe some day... Buy it if you want something different. Buy it if you want a game set in snowy and mountainous locations (Like the north and the wall in Game of Thrones; I love those!). Definitely buy it if you like story driven and having a direct involvement in how the story unfolds. Don't buy it if you like action. Don't buy it if you don't like reading in games. Don't buy it if you don't have patience. Definitely an original and enjoyable game. Hope this helps! :)

Engaging world with hit/miss mechanics
Once the story in The Banner Saga develops, you’ll get involved in a Nordic land inhabited by humans, Varl (giants) and weird Dredge who represent the evil that you face. The music elevates the land to a mystical world. Characters, your heroes, have interesting dialog options and lead a caravan through a dramatic story. It is sad that the many references to a changing world are not visualized on the world map. The character backgrounds and the world’s lore, like the world eating serpent, carry the story. On the other hand, the unnatural Dredges seem a bit out of place. Sometimes characters change personality in extreme and unexpected ways, like the prince that goes from being a child, undertakes heroic actions, and then suddenly behaves like a naïve old grumpy man. The old man and young woman would have fitted better in the story if they would have switch personalities, and Hakon is suddenly a leader of people without any mention that he was on the path of becoming one. I mean, would you not take notice of a very charismatic person? The game is short. The end battle is a complete disaster, as it highlights a severe problem with initiative in the combat system. On the other hand, the concept of health and armor, where you need to consider targeting one or the other, is actually well done. Overall, I enjoyed The Banner Saga mostly for its story and interesting cast of characters (with extreme personalities). The game offers little replayability and the combat system is serviceable, nothing great.
