A Gem of a Roguelike w/ Wide Appeal...

Tangledeep tried to do something different with this roguelike. Multiple distinct character customization through an innovative freeform system of job point expenditures, intermixed with equipment customization and trial based growth and classless levelling. The various different types of builds you can experiment with are grand, and Tangledeep offers something that people not otherwise traditionally interested in roguelikes like ToME or ADOM that heightens the appeal... A modifiable permadeath system, as well as complex game modifiers that radically alter how you want to play and engage with the combat. This is the type of roguelike that sucks in the type of people who just want to try out diffeent builds and to organically build characters on the fly. Character and build complexity is deep to sink your teeth into, but not overwhelming as to artificially segregate itself from newer players. The story, while simple, is far more interesting than a lot of the cookie-cutter high fantasy that you might otherwise expect out of a roguelike. With an interesting world, with light humour, and an unravelling plotline that begins to lean it towards a more sci-fi dimension as you uncover secrets of Tangledeep and your journey through the mystery of this subterranean wonderland. That being said, replayability is about build design. The Shara DLC is kind of necessary after awhile to spice things up. Whether you're a rogue veteran, or you've wanted to get your hands on a game with freeform RPG mechanics that rewards experimentation, Tangledeep is worth the investment.

TD is not a game, but an experience.

Tangledeep comes very close to be one of the greatest rogue-like of all time with its wide range of things to do and its charm, both in gameplay and design. Gameplay wise. the selection of multiple, interesting character's classes allows for interesting and various strategies, and that's not even considering the possibility to multiclass and learn multiple weapon specific skills. On top of that, there is even a companion system, similar to pokemòn, where you can feed and bring along the various critters you capture along the way. Furthermore, its graphics and soundtrack help a lot in the player's immersion in the adventure and exploration of various dungeons that offer a good variety of enemies and items to finds. And these elements (graphic, design, soundtrack and gameplay) support the main star of Tangledeep: its exploration's system. Indeed, same as every rpg rogue-like out there, you'll go floor to floor to find better loot and side-quests, but believe me when I say Tangledeep does in its own style and makes it so rewarding and satisfying. However, as mention before, TD didn't manage to escape the clutches of repetitivity: after a while of exploring, the game ends too soon with new things to discover, after that it is just monotonous. And that's where the game fails : as a rogue-like, it does not manage to be interesting after you discover and beat it the main story, and even before the ending of the game starts to be boring. But, besides that, the game surely is something to behold and to play at least once in your life , because what you'll find is something more beautiful than simple gameplay : a sense of discovery and winder that, I don't know even how, that the game carries like a glim of light in a deep and dark cave in the forest (.. too poetic but you'll get the idea if you buy it).

Love it!

I'm 6 hours in right now and I absolutely love it! I started as a Budoka, Monk Fist Class, (which they say it's average difficulty) and had no problems so far surviving in the dungeon. The atmosphere is great, the music fantastic and graphics not bad at all. You slowly extend your town, like growing trees for food and open the portal to the dream world to upgrade your items. Give it a try!

One of the best Roguelikes

This little gem with charming and distinct pixel graphics is in my opinion the best fantasy Roguelike game on the market. Lots of different classes which you can change if you want and even keep and use abilities across classes. This allows for a lot of different builds and playstyles. You may even make class changing for free through an special feat before starting your run. There are quite some options for tailoring the playthrough to your liking: ranging from "play this game as an Dungeon Crawler" to "hardcore Roguelike pain". Of course you will also find a lot of random magical items while battling through the Tangledeep labyrinth. The only downside compared to other Roguelikes are the reduced characterization options as there are no different races and you are settled to one gender (female in this case). Although this also produces an upside as every class has unique and more animations than what is usually done in Roguelikes, e. g. Tales of Maj'Eyal.

Unbalanced, but Fun

This is like one of those old Roguelike RPGs where movement is turn-based, something like Castle of the Winds or the Fushigi na Dungeon franchise. In addition to the usual, you have a class system, which brings quite a variety of options, and you get to keep the skills you learn, even after changing class again. Most of the classes work really well, too; I even found a mage class that I like, and I almost never like playing a mage! Another nice touch is having a different look to your avatar with each class, but you still have the option of choosing the appearance of any class you've been before. The music is reminiscent of early-SNES-era Jun Ishikawa with a splash of Yasunori Mitsuda; absolutely exquisite! The only real gripe I have is that the challenge is VERY unbalanced. At times I'd blow through a boss like nothing, only to be slaughtered in seconds by ordinary minions, and the final boss is a total brick wall. This wouldn't be so bad, were it not for the fact that experience scales down as you level up, so grinding isn't really a viable option; leveling up in a previous area will take an eternity. At the very least, you can choose different difficulties to mitigate the punishment you receive for a cheap death; they come in Roguelike (permadeath that erases your save), Roguelite (permadeath but unlocked classes and banked items remain), and Diet Rogue with Lime (death sends you back to the village with half your current experience, unspent JP, and money). Overall, it is a very enjoyable experience, if you're into this sort of thing, but it's not without its frustrations.
