In the bloody aftermath of an intergalactic war between powerful alien races, a once-thriving network of starships, space stations, and planets are left lifeless and bear the scars of the apocalypse. As Stationmaster, it is up to you to rebuild the abandoned space stations, reunite the survivors, and bring the old Empire back to its former glory.
Populated by diverse alien species, such as the ecologically-minded and laid back Karmarama or the caring and gentle Dahenese Sirens, each space station comes to life with crime, trade, entertainment, racial tensions, and friendships. With these factors in mind, reconstruct and operate your station by managing the diverseand varied resident aliens while you also protect them against threats such as meteor showers, alien vermin infestations, roving bands of space pirates, and outbreaks of particularly virulent plagues. It’s not easy rebuilding civilization from the ruins, but the future is in your hands. Will you rise up to the challenge and build a Startopia that is ideal for everyone?
Nine primary character races, each with a unique look and function. Each inhabitant is an individual character, with unique moods, desires, personal history, and humorous character animations.
Fully functioning alien society, with racial animosity and friendships, crime and punishment, leisure and entertainment, and dynamic functioning economy.
Bio-deck with editable landscape and manageable ecosystem gives you complete control of terra-forming.

This is a must have for any management sim lover and comes close to the love I have for Theme Hospital.
The only gripe I had with it is that that the shortness of the campaign surprised me.
I adore this Game and played it for more than ten years and it never got boring. The loveable details, the different decks and the funny characters like Arona, HAL and the Karmarama. I wish I could play it on my Mac. Is there any Mac-Version!? PLEASE!?
IMHO I think that this game resembles a lot of the old games bullfrog use to make, and I actually think that some of the same team members helped in making this one.
Back in the days there were only sold around a 100.000 copies.
The whole experience felt pretty flat to me.
This is a light-hearted and humorous base builder with some combat thrown in. Unfortunately, the Douglas Adams style comedy just didn't have that Douglas Adams genius and although I cracked a smile here and there, I think it mostly missed the mark.
The pacing is slow at times and I found the interface to be disjointed and clunky, especially when hiring aliens. There is almost nothing provided in the way of in game descriptions of what the various items and buildings do for your visitors (Sick Bay is obvious enough, but how about the Dispenser?) Some of the items that you can place within buildings don't seem to have any purpose at all. The game manual is no help here either.
Aside from the space port segments that constrict you from expanding until you've unlocked them, the whole space setting seemed to be just a skin and any other setting would have worked just as well. Or maybe I just didn't play far enough into the game.
The best games I've ever played are inexplicably more than the sum of their parts. In my opinion, Startopia does not belong in that category.
