The action of Star Wolves takes place in the distant future. In order to fight piracy on intergalactic transit lanes humanity has legalized the institute of "head-hunters" - mercenaries owning high-speed space interceptors whose main goal is to struggle with all sorts of criminal scum. You're one of those head-hunters, armed only with a small amount of money, a couple of ships and a strong ambition driving you ever forward.
A combination of role-playing and real-time tactics gameplay, set in the distant future
Extensive character development and ship fitting options

This game is only fun for those whose already played and loved it back then. Today it is clanky, barely working, you need to save after every encounter. I do see the potential, but it fails both technically (crashes, a lot of chrashes) and gameplay (fightes close to an object even your own mothership explodes due to it stuck to it). I can't recommend this game.
Well, it's a good GOG buy, really I recommend it. It's a good game - addictive, sometimes challenging.
Basically: bunch of pilots, one ship and lot's of shit to kill.
Good: great soundtrack, nice story, cool gameplay, intuitive interface and great graphics
Bad: the designs of ships are IMO a bit lacking (like in Sins of the Solar Empire, the ships aren't pretty ;( ), rpg aspect isn't really anything besides "We planned how you should put the points and you really won't put them differently anyway". Um, no voiceacting is really frickin stupid too. And the worst thing of all:
DON'T EXPECT HUGE SPACE BATTLES!
You're a mercenary here, and you have the work of mercenary. You aren't taking part in any bigger engagements (well mostly not, some of them are present)
I don't know if you find this review useful but... i don't really know how to describe it. Watch a video on youtube. You have like 6 fighters, one cow-ship, er, i mean mothership and you try to beat other fighters :P
Though if you liked Nexus: the jupiter incident, you can jump at SW right away
Yeah, the voice acting is bizarre but otherwise this game has been keeping me pretty entertained.
It feels alot like a smaller scale Homeworld to me except with an RPG element instead of resource management.
Trying to manage your ships and skills to hit that sweet spot is quite involved and very satisfying when you get it right!
Graphics are ok, games like this you don't spend too much time up close to the ships and sound wise I can happily play with the sound off without missing much.
Overall one of my favourite GoG purchases on here which wasn't a game I played before!
You want some squad-based story-driven real time action set in the Post-Sovietcalypse with Homeworld controls and Russian Rock/ Synth OST in the last place that has (not) been corrupted by capitalism?
Of course you do.
And who needs proper English voiceover anyway?
What you DO need are some tiny tweaks to get it to run smoothly on your 2024 gaming PC.
Looks nice, controls work fine, nice skill tree for your pilots. And I guess thats it.
I really tried to like it but I gave up after about 5 missions.
It simply fails to be enjoyable. If there were an open world mode, where I could roam the stars freely, choose whatever mission I liked and develop my pilots in my own way -- that would be fun.
Instead I am forced to follow an uninspired story, search every mission for loot and finally reload 10 times, trying to defeat the next boss. But I forgot to buy the repair modul || hire the pirate || buy the shield module || find the superlaser in the mission before ... so I have to reload an older save to "get it right".
