Based on a strategy board game, Star Fleet Battles, Star Trek™: Starfleet Command Gold Edition puts you in the captain's chair of a frigate. Each successful mission gains you prestige and furthers your career. Experience a 30 year campaign that can take you as far as becoming a Rear Admiral in control of a task force including Destroyers, Heavy Cruisers, and Dreadnoughts.
Discover uncharted Nebulae, maneuver through dense asteroid fields and belts or battle at the fringe of a black hole. The different types of terrain require commanders to exercise additional caution and skill. Maneuver to keep your target within the arc of your weapons, but remember that these are massive ships and you will have to plan ahead. Between campaign missions refit and repair your ships at Starbase. Recruit new officers or send your trainees back into the officer pool to earn additional prestige.
Command over 50 unique campaign missions generated by the Dynaverse engine, or reenact classic scenarios from the original series.
Pledge allegiance in the Klingon Empire, the United Federation of Planets, the Romulan Star Empire, the Hydran Kingdom, the Gorn Confederation or the Lyran Star Empire.
Gold Edition features an additional 3 new Federation missions, 3 new Klingon missions, 10 new Hydran missions 7 new Gorn missions, 3 new Romulan missions, and more!
I absolutely love this game, but there's a glitch in the Romulan campaign that makes it unwinnable. That's a huge issue, as the campaign is one of the big draws to this game.
While much of what was broken has been fixed remarkably well, another once-over is still needed before I can recommend this to anyone, since even the multiplayer is touchy and one wrong button press willl lead to the game just closing, or freezing, etc.
Though you might be able to do a LAN party with it if you tried hard enough.
Have the CD's for this game (somewhere). Used to play this on my WIndows XP (or was it WIndows 98SE machine)? Reviewing from the original CD's as I haven't installed G.O.G.'s version on my WIn 7 laptop (yet).
Playing against the computer is mind-blowingly frustrating at first (the computer runs rings around you and can decide more quickly as well). Hmmm, reminds me of "The Ultimate Computer" episode from the original series where the Enterprise is controlled by the Mark 5 computer, but I digress.
As others have pointed out this is based on an old pen and paper strategy game (which was turn based). You CAN play the PC game as turn based but I like to play it as "real time". It's mostly about managing your power. Lot's of options (like maxing out the phasers to cause maximum damage to your opponent - even though it burns out your phaser and damages your ship in the process). Be advised it takes a w-h-i-l-e to figure out how to best the computer but it's worth it when you do. And if you can find someone to play two player games with it's a real blast.
I want to love this game but the scripting issues with the missions break it. Here's an example *spoiler alert*:
The Federation mission "Nest of Spies" - once your boarding team has been rumbled and the bizarro-universe Feds have turned against you, you will receive a "fail" if you destroy both of the attacking ships - the starbase messages you to say the meeting is off....even though the meeting has ALREADY happened and your subterfuge has been uncovered.
There's a lot of this sort of thing, and it's hugely dispiriting when it happens.
Game crashed for me initially. Tried it at 40% off and figured I'd return if it didn't work.
Can't speak to campaign as haven't tried it yet.
I modified a few settings and skirmish works on Windows 10 w/o crashing
