What I hoped would be a decent collection of SNK’s early gaming efforts ended up being one of the most impressive retro compilations I’ve encountered in recent memory. While not every game included will excite more casual players, those who do have an appreciation for the library offered here will find them presented with a level of care, concern, and passion that is too rarely seen.

Overall, SNK 40th Anniversary Collection has titles that old school arcade gamers are sure to appreciate and also does an impressive job of diving deep into the company’s four-decade history. However, this may be even more of a niche collection than the Capcom Beat’em Up Bundle, which could work against it in the end..

Crystalis. (works great on Steam Deck!)

Most these games... If you're not a Crystalis fan this collection isn't worth it. also don't ever buy this game full priced, wait for a sale. i bought this collection so i could have Crystalis, as i enjoyed it on the switch nso service back then, but nowadays i really only play on the deck so this is great in that regard. the reason i give four stars is it's worth $6 usd for Crystalis alone imo, even though it's still kinda pricey for a single NES rom to enjoy. on another note: iirc they have strange/restrictive custom controls so i have to use steam's controller options to make it how i like. very annoying. also if you are wondering, as far as i can tell this collection is not like snk's other titles that just have the roms laying about in the files, so that's unfortunate.

In loving memory of...

From the perspective of a nostalgic nerd; Instead of just bundling a bunch of retro games, this collection goes a step further and includes a full museum! The games themselves are very enjoyable, but the amount of context included adds beautiful filters to already rose-colored glasses. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys retro gaming, but if you fondly remember any of these games, I compel you to buy it!

Buy it for Crystalis

Crystalis is one of the best NES games of all time. Its an action-RPG where you have to save a post-apocalyptic world from an evil empire and a doomsday tower. Along the way you get elemental swords and magical powers. Think Mad Max meets Star Wars meets Nausicaa Valley of the Wind. The gameplay is most similar to Ys Origin and Oath In Felghana. Great music, charming 8-bit graphics, a fun story for an NES game, and a good sense of power progression.

Excellent throwback to SNK's early days.

Before they became the fighting game juggernaut known for Fatal Fury, King of Fighters, Samurai Shodown & many others, SNK was simply just another video game company putting out niche titles in the arcade & on consoles. And this collection contains some of their earliest games including Athena, Psycho Soldier & Crystalis. Highly recommened if you want to see SNK's beginning roots.

Amazing Collection!

As you may know this is not a Neo-Geo collection rather pre Neo Geo. Games plays and looks nice, region options, lots more. It also has a museum were you can watch from obscure games that never saw the light to some of the games present in this collection with text alongside with rich information. Wish i could see more of this kind of Arcade Collections in the future, specially here.
