You play Sanjuro Makabe, a Mobile Combat Armor (MCA) pilot and Commander in the UCA Security Force. The UCA was originally formed by three dominant megacorporations (Andra Biomechanics, Armacham Technology Corporation, and Shogo Industries). Originally intended as a joint venture that would ensure the continued profitability of the three organizations that founded it, the UCA is now independent, and the dominant military power in existence.
Your mission is to locate and assassinate a rebel leader known only as Gabriel. All of the action takes place either on the planet Cronus or on the spaceship Leviathan. The Leviathan is the flagship of the UCA and is commanded by Admiral Akkaraju. Cronus is the only known source of the biologically active material known as Kato, an incredibly powerful energy source essential to the process by which interstellar travel is possible.
Your deadly enemy is The Fallen, a fanatical terrorist group lead by the mysterious Gabriel, threatens the balance of power on Cronus, and ultimately, control of Kato. You will fight them on your feet or from within one of the different types of Mobile Combat Armor, a giant mech which can run, duck, strafe, swim or transform into an ultrafast hovertank.
You will know the true power of giant robots!
Anime-influenced graphics and gameplay design
Fight on foot or pilot a giant mech in both open and urban environments
An interesting storyline with two possible endings
This game sorely needs to be patched for modern platforms. This is one of my favorite niche games from my childhood, and while this release worked maybe a decade ago on windows 7, it has not worked for a long, long time. Every so often I download it and see if it works yet but unfortunately it is still just borked.
I really, really love this game in spite of and because of its of-the-era trappings, but this release goes against GoG's missions statement completely - it doesn't even work. They really shouldn't be selling it, or at least sell it with the caveat that it only works on old systems so you'll need to run a VM or something to use it.
Please patch this.
I actually bought Shogo a looong time ago for $5. I had never heard of it before, but the graphics looked good (at the time) and it was only $5 so I gave it a shot. It didn't even come with a box, it was just the jewel case. Anyway, I wasn't expecting much but actually was a lot of fun! From what I remember the game was simple and all action. I liked the parts where you run around in a Mec and shoot at tanks and trucks in the city while you tower over them. I don't think I finished the game, but it's definitely worth the $6.
It's a shame this game was released around the same time as Half Life, because it was overlooked by a lot of people back then. It really is an amazing game, and one of the best first person shooters of the 3d era. Many of the character models are obviously dated, but otherwise the graphics still hold up even ten years later - and the gameplay is still top notch.
The first time I play Shogo, I was a bit decieved, because the mecha play like a classic fps, and not as a mechwarrior like. But Shogo is really a brilliant game. Why ? Even in 2008, I play again this game, and I enjoy it. The manga universe is ok, and the gunfight are actually very good and nervous! One of my favourite old style fps.
