Even more niche than the first one
Being a fan of Duke Nukem 3D I was really surprised (and pleased) to discover Shadow Warrior (classic). It may have not been as good, but it still had its charm. Fast forward into the new age, and we got a reboot and a sequel. At first I was unhappy with the reboot because it felt wonky, but replaying it on a better system, I really enjoyed it - the story was interesting, the swordplay was fun, and the guns were...alright (though not very good). Now Shadow Warrior 2 is something of a disappointment. The plot doesn't seem as interesting, Lo Wang is an @ssh0le again (whatever happened to all that character development from the previous game?), and there are many plot holes regarding the time between the two (new) games (supposedly covered in collectable text files). The seemingly nice and innocent Ameonna is now this demonic mafioso-vixen, Lo Wang still doesn't get to fight the twin assassins from the first game (why are they even characters?), most of his Chi and swordplay abilities from the first game are locked again, and the ones available were renamed for some reason. Buying the Deluxe pack forces you into using the golden weapons without the ability to switch them out (technically you get the normal SMG later, but still). And don't even get me started on the looter-shooter gameplay style, the constant repetition, the long load-times, and the silly decision to add a "hub" level. Among the good things are the new weapons (though there are too many for me to really care and the upgrading is kinda tedious); the swordplay is still pretty fun, some of the humour's also good. Also the music. The plot works, though given the game's non-linear approach, it's kinda ruined sometimes, and so far, I haven't seen any really interesting plot points. All in all, if you want a looter-shooter in a Shadow Warrior setting, it's pretty good. Otherwise, just do the main questline and shelf the game. Have nothing to say of the multiplayer as I didn't try it.
