If you liked the first Shadow Warrior from 2013, this is different. The Levels are bigger, there is wang more weapons and modifications for the weapons and yourself. The game is wang more RPGish (still a FPS, more like Borderlands), which leads to a game with more running from A to B, visting the same loacations again and again. The story is not always as present as in the first game, nor is the game packed with atmospere. Story still good. Wang, the one-liners, the fortune cookies, all still there. This is why there is still 5/5. It's different than the first part, still great.
If you enjoyed the reboot from 2013 and wanted/expected more of it you may end up disappointed.
SW2 feels so different compared to SW2013 and for you to enjoy SW2 you will need to love ARPGs or Borderlands. So now off to the game itself.
Combat feels and it is faster than the reboot. You still have your dash but you also have unlimited stamina and double jump that turns you into the Tasmanian devil. Combo presses from SW2013 are sort of gone. Pick a direction and right click to execute one of the 3 kind of special melee attacks. Press one of 5 hot keys for a "spell".
Game offers 71 weapons spread in different categories and requiring different ammo and you can put 8 max on your radial menu. SW2 also adds loot system in form of gem upgrades. You can upgrade your weapons, armor, skills and you also have an amulet slot. Gem upgrade varies: changing basic weapon stats, add elemental damage, add different modes(spread shot, turret mode, rapid fire, explosive projectle, piercing ammo, etc), improve your skills and basic stats(hp/chi, item found, karma).
Instead of linear levels, SW2 gives you open maps which have 2 areas to let you mayhem through but afterall they all start to feel the same.
Story is... meh. You still get a companion in your head but it only success in making you want Hoji back. Story spans over 13 missions and it also comes with 15 side quests. Each one of them is marked as its own entry on the map which you use to teleport to a location(yes SW2 is hub-based). Game has 3 themes for the maps - wilderness, cyber city and chinese slum.
Because of the leveling/loot sytem, the challenge is soon gone and you can just breeze through Insane. Open maps let you retreat from tough fights. On top of that game lacks end game content ala Borderlands so there arent many reason to beat(2 playthroughs and you have all weapons).
Co-op - still need work for stability.
All in all buy only if you want more Wang and enjoyed ARPGs/Borderlands else replay the reboot.
Seriously, everything that was great about Shadow Warrior 2013, the swordplay, the humor, the enemy variety, the over the top gore, the movement, were all vastly improved from the previous game. The movement ability lets you soar across the map with dashing, as well as quickly moving out of the way of attacks, and the swordplay's controls were improved to be much less clunky and landing special attacks is much easier. Gunplay is definitely secondary to the swordplay, which is fine as swordplay is where the reboot Shadow Warrior series in general shines. Definitely the greatest first person swordplay system ever made. The humor is good as ever, with Lo Wang's smartass comments contrasting nicely with everyone else and in an age where Duke Nukem is saddled with Gearbox Software, the wisecracking badass is always welcome.
Of course, the actual Diablo/Borderlands style upgrade system doesn't really help the game. While the menu isn't too clunky once you make use of the junk system, allowing you to shove anything you're not using into a separate menu and making upgrading far less tedious, it's still annoying that everything is RNG based rather than allowing you to prioritize upgrades.
Nevertheless, the rest of the game is still great enough that this doesn't detract too much from the game, and it rivals the awesome 2016 version of Doom as one of the greatest FPS released this year.
I have no idea how these guys pulled off this game.
The graphics are flat out amazing. The swordplay is a blast.
RPG elements, quests, levels, items, upgrades, tons of weapons, reliable, and CO-OP!!!
Bought two copies and have been playing all weekend co op.
I don't leave many reviews, but I loved the first Shadow Warrior redo and this second one exceeded all my expectations and then some. Buy it now, you will love it!
One of the best combat system I have ever experienced in a fps. Fighting is intense, visceral, exciting and very satisfying (well, and slightly addictive). The boss fights are tough, especially on higher difficulty settings, but fair. On higher difficulty settings you need to pay attention to the power system which gives the fights an additional kick. They only small drawback is that dash is a bit overpowered, taking you to safety almost always. The story is obviously not important but the characters are, for a comic book story like that, actually quite likeable. The main reason I am not totally overwhelmed is the repeated reuse of areas. And of areas in areas. The different settings are fine, but there only very few which are reused up to 3-4 times. Nevertheless, if you like action games, this one will provide you with fun – slightly mindless, but really intense.
