I tried to install it after I heard it got "upgraded" to the Re-Elected version, and was greeted by a setup trying to install the Epic Store Launcher. I managed to hit cancel on it but this is a new low even for GOG.
They haven't learned anything after Hitman.
I was never crazy about Saints Row IV. Sure, it was fun enough, but it was developed as an expansion to SR3 and it kinda shows. To me it felt a bit crap of Volition to charge full price for this, considering they reused so much from SR3. The writing doesn't hold a candle to SR2 either. But whatever, if you enjoyed the previous two you'll probably get a kick out of this, so it was probably worth picking up for a fiver or something on a sale.
But man, this new update is a scummy move for sure:
* By many accounts it makes the game far less stable
* Your old save files don't work any more
* The borderless windowed feature has been removed
* It forces you to install Epic Games' software, which is unnecessary bloat at best, spyware/malware at worst (and in either case, one would imagine, goes against GOG's whole DRM-free policy, so why is this allowed here CDP?)
* It's forced on you, so you're no longer getting the product you paid for
Apparently the previous version should be available, but a) it should just be a separate product and if you want to give a copy of that separate product for free to existing users then fine, and b) apparently the beta build feature in GOG Galaxy doesn't even work right now. I don't know, because I don't use it and the update is only available to Galaxy users, because fuck the rest of us I guess. This is why I also can't comment on the impact to stability: I couldn't install this update if I wanted to. I don't particularly want it, of course, it's just crap that they're not keeping parity between Galaxy + the offline installers.
Don't support this. I mean… what the hell, Volition? This is a studio where I've been playing (and largely enjoying) their games for two decades now. It's been so sad to see their decline over the last several years, but this is just bizarre really. It's so blatantly and brazenly anti-consumer, you can almost hear them twirling their moustaches. Personally, I'm completely set on never giving them another penny.
I've always skipped Saints Row games.
WHAT THE HELL WAS I THINKING.
Got this game on another platform a couple months back, with no idea of what would I get.
And here's what I got: FUN. Lots of fun. LAUGHS, for the love of all that's holy, so much time spent without a game making me have some real, authentic laughing time.
Fun dialogues, fun and weird quests (all of the dominatrix dlc things are SO PERFECTLY WRONG), the game is constantly giving you new ways to break it. The basic premise is "Hey, you always wanted to do this in a game but those classic-minded devs never let you? The wait is over, here, take this SRIV copy".
The only con I can find to this game is that once I did finish it, didn't feel much of a replayability thing. But every second I played of it, was worth my time.
Do not hesitate and grab this gem. More so, now that it's on sale.
One of a kind.
As Saints Row games go, this one was decent. Really comes down to whether you're up for an even more zany experience than what SR3 had on offer.
None of that really matters though as Deep Silver and Volition, in their infinite wisdom, and years after the fact, have updated the game to a so-called "Re-Elected" edition which includes some malware from Tencent.
Probably skip if you value your PC's integrity and/or your personal data.
