I really like this game, the setting and the atmosphere are something special. Although the performance leaves something to be desired. A few glitches here and there, but nothing serious. Gameplay-wise, it's pretty much what you can expect from an old console port. So, if you like a bit of stealth, but mostly shooting your way out of bad situations, this game, with its somewhat cartoonish charm, might be worth a look.
I had expectations for this game. Being a WWII era shooter, you might hold a preconception on how a game in this category would play out. However, the game absolutely blew my expectations.
For starters, the setting is refreshing and eye-catching. It mostly takes place in a Nazi-occupied France, and with that comes many incredible locations, such as famous monuments and a beautiful country side. While the city and country side can be somewhat repetitive, I never got bored of it, as I sometimes do with similarly scoped games. The visual style is also incredible, with areas turning monochrome with specific color highlights when they're "occupied" or emotionally charged.
The story is also nice. It's about revenge and war and all the good stuff. I don't want to spoil it too much so I won't say much other than I enjoyed it. The ending did feel somewhat underwhelming, though.
The gameplay is really fun! The shooting feels good, though the cover mechanics can be a bit janky. The sabotaging, the namesake of the game, is also really fun; making life awful for Nazis is really enjoyable! The variety of the sabotaging you can do is limited, however, and there's a lot of sabotage opportunities, so it can feel repetitive. The driving is satisfactory, though it's nothing particularly special. You also do a fair bit of climbing and parkour, which feels good but can also be janky at times. 100% completion can take some time (about 36 hours for me).
From a technical standpoint, its alright. I did experience a fair number of both gameplay and graphic bugs/glitches and I did crash once. The game runs well at full HD, though the lack of graphics options is disappointing. You're pretty much stuck with the settings the developers intended.
All in all, it's an incredible game. It has a fair number of flaws, sure, but it's one of those titles you might not have heard of before but that you don't want to miss out on.
I had my doubts when i first was going to play it some years ago, but nowadays is my favorite game of all time and that´s no easy feat, I Love it! It´s fun and has spirit, it is not perfect but damn is it awesome!
There is not much that makes sense in Saboteur. The plot is full of holes, the characters overly cliche, and the open world mechanics are just extremely unrealistic. Yet, playing the game is just thoroughly enjoyable. Cruising down the parisian streets, popping up evil Nazi soldiers, and even blowing up nazi scout towers feels immensively satisfying. Combat is a flow and when you get some of the more advance weapons you do feel like you are an impending killing machine ready to take down the whole nazi-regime in and outside of Paris.
It does have a very macho-story with this Irishman constantly cursing, being a blunt asshole, and being surrounded by hot woman. The game even starts out with a cabaret dancing scene with naked women and the game also allows you to turn on a "nude mode" where the female dancers are totally naked. Obviously a game primarily aimed at a male audience. xD
Unfortunately, the game feels incomplete in many areas. Although the city's visual are complete you can't deny the feeling that the game was planned for more side missions than was actually put in the game. There are several areas which look very interesting but are never set up by a mission, so you would only go there if you were exploring. Also, the story leaves several unsolved questions and the ending is a bit anti-climatic. It feels like the game was close to reaching its potential but didn't quite get there.
But it was fun to play! And even if the nazis are pretty dumb in their pursuit of you when triggering alarms you can't help finding enjoyment in just shooting and wreacking chaos in the streets. Recommended!
A game from a different era. This was back when companies were creative and weren't (too) afraid to take risks. This game oozes style and holds up. The graphics are decent and didn't bother me (this game was released in 2009). I had a blast setting tnt on Nazi structures and driving away in my race car while getting shot at by the Nazis chasing after me only to get out of the car and hide in a restroom while the nazis run on by. Shooting is fine and I love how as you complete the missions there is more color over time (Nazi occupied areas are gray looking with red and blue being highlighted and while it's raining.)
I hope my review helps convinces you to buy the game and so far my game time is over 20 hours long.
