Mars is cold, empty and uninviting
I played this game on Linux using Bottles. It crashed a few times, but otherwise worked well enough. When I read up on this game I thought: "Just Cause 2... In space!? Sign me up!" But, alas, Mars is big, red, and empty. So, the game opens with the protagonist and his brother doing some demolition work, when EDF attacks them, kills his brother and tries to kill him. Rebels, the Red Faction, save our hero and tell him "You're one of us now." and he is one of them from then on. I guess. A character then shows up and fills us in on the situation - by handing us a pamphlet to read. That's it, we're terrorists now. No time to grieve, commence mass murder and mayhem! I was not impressed by this introduction to the game. There's really no story to speak of from there on either. And the character who gave us our homework? She proceeds to be pretty much a non-character from there on. I'd go as far as saying the game has no characters. The only NPC with any character is Jenkins, and he doesn't get much screen time. Antagonists in the EDF are also non-entities. What about the setting? Mars, that's pretty cool, right? No, sorry, Mars is a big dusty desert with little to see. Points for realism, I guess. I did find the Mars Rover though. That was a nice easter egg. You get around Mars by driving vehicles. These vehicles handle like the Mako from Mass Effect and are wont to flip any time there's a pebble on the road. This gets really annoying really fast. Some of the driving side missions have pretty tight time limits and flipping over when driving on a straight road is infuriating. Ok, what about combat? Combat is actually ok. Nothing special, but competent. There's a good selection of weapons and you can use the environment to your advantage by dropping a house on your enemies. Whoever thought it was a great idea to bind the jetpack to same key as taking cover was bona fide genius though. The main selling point is probably the ability to destroy buildings, which is pretty cool. For a while. A bit more variety would be appreciated. Blasting through a house with a mech is pretty satisfying though. If destroying buildings is your cup of tea, this game might be for you. God knows there's not much more on offer. Go amok. Side missions are pretty good. Gun fights and saving guerrillas are fun, so are the destruction challenges. Convoys and trailing missions are certainly in the game, that's about all I can say there. Racing missions are not very interesting either, because the environment is quite dull. For me, the best side mission was definitely riding around with Jenkins blasting targets with a cannon. Just destruction for its own sake, with Jenkins throwing out commentary on the way. Technically the game ran fine and looked good with plenty of options, so the remaster is competent. My xinput controller would not work for whatever reason, but mouse and keyboard sufficed. In summary, I did not enjoy this game and can't recommend it. Some people will certainly find it to their liking, but I think there are better games with similar mechanics. The Just Cause games, for example. Heck, when this game came out Volition themselves had already released two Saints Row games, which offer a far better open world experience with great writing and colorful characters. I suppose that's part of my disappointment: I expected more from Volition and the great premise they had to work with. Two stars out of five.
