Classic iD Excellence.

Quake 2 is an important game. It was iD Software's first post-shareware era title, it was one of the very first games to utilize 3D Acceleration out of the box, its the first FPS to include object-based gameplay and it was an early adopter of the WASD + Mouse control method. Quake 2 feels much more like a spiritual successor to Doom than the original Quake does, due the the fact that the gameplay is so fast paced. This Quad Damage Pack includes all of the content, so you'll still be plenty busy once you've beaten the main game. If you need your old games with a bit of polish, there are source ports like Quake 2 XP, which make everything look more fancy and adds widescreen support.

Great Game

If you played Quake II in the past and want to get it back again, I would recommend this package. It is the original game, the mission packs, and EraserBot (the multiplayer bot package). Nice touch for me was having it packaged together so that launching EraserBot was relatively idiot-proof. Still need to google the bot commands though. The music may or may not work straight off, which is not ideal. There are some .ogg files in /QuakeII/music that may need CTRL+C, CTRL+V into /QuakeII/baseq2/music in order to work. Or it may be that you need to download those .ogg files and put them there yourself. It is very google-able and simple, even for someone like me. I can't remember exactly whether those .ogg files were part of the install but just in the wrong folder or whether they were missing altogether. The second thing that can improve the game is fullscreen and higher resolution, from the Quake 3.24 patch by Knightmare. Also not difficult to google and install.

Not a favorite

I didn't play this when it came out, so my review is based solely on a more modern (read: recent) experience. I played Wolfenstein 3D and Doom when they came out and Doom has dominated my interest ever since. I never really got into the Quake realm. I played and enjoyed the first Quake, but not nearly as much as Doom. And Quake II just never did it for me. I wouldn't consider it a bad shooter, but for me, it's just straight middle of the road average. Probably better than its competitors at the time, but inferior to some of its predecessors and unable to compete with subsequent games since. It's an ok game. I don't recommend it, as I didn't enjoy it. But I also know it has a very ardent following, so there's obviously something to be loved in Quake II. Maybe you'll find it. Or maybe you'll be like me.

SUPER FUN

It's a joy be able to play most of Nintendo 64 FPS. This is definitely the best port done by Nightdive Studios, it feels complete, something that lack some of their past releases.

Low-spec Friendly

You can expect to run this at native panel resolution at 60fps, even on Intel Integrated Graphics! The new campaign is more demanding and you might see dips but the game is still far more efficient than 99% of relases these days; there are "N64"-style games using Unity that are unplayable for me, Quake II is accessible to laptop users.
