Very enjoyable 90s FPS

Quake II tends to get a bad rep. This is mostly due to the fact that it's a follow-up to one of the greatest FPS ever released, which is Quake. Quake II lacks the Lovecraftian world, is much slower, and nowhere near as frenetic and challenging. Once one has accepted that Quake II is a very different game, one can begin to like it for what it does well. The enemies are varied, encounters nicely balanced, weapons progression makes a lot of sense, and the levels manage to be semi-open yet you still always know where to go and what to do. The only real issue are the bosses: You pop quad damage and that's it, each of them takes 5-10 seconds to beat. Also, if you don't like brown or gray, the graphics may not be to your liking. Each of the mission packs are roughly half as long as the original. The Reckoning essentially is more of the same, albeit not as inspired. New enemies are just old enemies with new abilities, the levels can get confusing at times, and some of the new weapons are game-breaking good. The last few levels get really tedious, as you're fighting an enemy capable of one-shotting the player over and over again. Ground Zero is usually panned, but for no good reason. The first Unit is clearly the weakest: overly complex and confusing, with lots of backtracking and 'What now?' moments. From there, it gets better and better: Challenging new enemies, decently original weapons, and some imaginative level design. Sure, the turrets are tedious, but two rail hits and they're scrap. Some have said Ground Zero is unnecessarily hard, but even on hard difficulty, it really still isn't. Bosses can still be vaporized within seconds by abusing power-ups. Overall, while not as memorable or genre-defining as its predecessor, Quake II is a straightforward and fun little FPS that aged surprisingly well. I recommend playing this in a source port. I've used Yamagi and had zero issues at any point.

Quake 2 Remastered, a Masterpiece

This will be a review of the Remastered version of Quake 2 that was released. First, I have to say that my excitement and joy when I heard about the news on Quakecon and that it was coming out of nowhere on the same day was truly a joyous experience, but how is the game itself? Starting with the overall elements of the remastered that can be noted are the improved graphics, soundtrack, and gameplay additions with crossplay and crossgen without the need for a Bethesda account unlike the Quake 1 remastered. Content wise they featured the original game and its expansions the Reckoning and Ground Zero with an additional brand-new campaign by Machine Games title the Call of the Machine and a surprise addition of Quake 2 64 remastered levels (only the ones that were new to that game as it featured the main game and some additional levels) Special mention to the addition of the compass to the equipment wheel as it improves the experience a whole lot as all of the Quake 2 levels are contriving mazes that lead into other hubs. How is the game itself? It cannot get better than this, the overall gameplay loop in addition to the soundtrack creates a masterful menagerie of a gameplay loop with the core weapons feeling like they all belong and worthy of use. The campaigns are all excellent with special mention to the Call of the Machine which is new to the remastered. That features extremely varied locale and new bosses with a gigantic leap in difficulty and something for the lore experts as well (The origins of the Strogg and the connection to Q1 might satiate people’s appetite). Original Quake 2 campaign is a classic with a main theme of Strogg bases/industrial locations which do not overstay their welcome. The Reckoning is a gigantic expansion with varied locale and new weapons, but the length might be to its detriment as the last stretch is overly long. Ground Zeros is the same thing but improved pacing and weapons and Q64 is a nice addition albeit rushed at the end. 10

Nightdive is at it, again

Simply the best way to experience Q II, it looks, plays and sounds great. And for 10 bucks (or if you were lucky enough to already own the original, it's free) there's so much content. Sure, when you think about it, it's a 1997 game with a good facelift, but it still holds well. My only complaint is that some area in the expansions have some difficulty spikes here and there where they just throw more enemies at you for some reason. Anyway, if you enjoyed the modern DOOM games or some of these indies Boomer shooters that come out every month, you'll love Quake II.

Easy way to get the mission packs

I've been playing this game at least occasionally since I got it in 1998 and I consider it my all-time favorite video game, thanks in large part to all the user-made addons and levels. (And I've made a few of my own.) But I never did get the Reckoning and Ground Zero mission packs. This GOG edition was a quick and convenient way to obtain them, compared to trying to scrounge up copies on ebay or hoping to run across secondhand copies at the thrift store. The original version of the game runs fine on newer computers as far as I can tell (at least on windows 8.1), as does this version. Don't forget to go to the video menu and select "default OpenGL". Some users, however, do like the rougher look of the software mode, although transparency became completely broken with version 3.20 (and resolutions higher than around 1024x768 may crash). The GOG version includes a launcher program that simplifies starting the mission packs or the mods in the Quad Damage package. As for Quad Damage, it's a collection of user-made multiplayer mods originally freely available as downloads but which may be difficult to find now. Also included are the TRDM* and ZTNDM* map series (these appear to be part of Quad Damage) and the 64-player id Software DM maps.

A well-made Re-Release of a classic FPS

There is not much to be said about Quake 2, it is an all-time classic among FPS. A clear development from the first game with a more fleshed out story and levels that are not abstract labyrinths, but more realistic. But they can still be tricky to navigate, the newly added compass that shows the way to the next goal is really helpful, as is the wheel for items, similar to a weapon wheel on console fps. The two official Addons The Reckoning and Ground Zero as well as a port of the Levels of Quake64 into the engine are included, which offer more, solid gameplay. The Addons add some new enemies, but most of them are just variants of already known foes. The new weapons also don't do anything groundbreaking. All are also relatively short with about 2-4 hours of gameplay (beaten on normal difficulty) The graphics seem similar, although many of the assets (like textures and models) have gotten some work, but I can only see the differences in side-by-side comparisons. They aren't many and if, they can be subtle to spot. Music and Sound stay the same. Another addition is the Archives, which include goodies like concept art or models from the game to view. Also, some early versions of the game, that were demoed at tradeshows are available to play, showcasing the rapid progress during the game’s development. Nothing that is an absolute must-have, but pretty neat. The clear highlight of this release is the new "Call of the Machine" episode. It consists of six mini episodes and a final boss fight; the structure reminds me more of the first game of the series. The environments range from the known futuristic styles of the base game to some very different. All the levels are well designed, I rarely needed the compass for orientation. There are no new weapons or enemies, but the developers take advantage of everything developed for the older addons. Overall, while I think the other addons can be skipped, this is must-play for fans.
