Nostalgia and Fun!

This is probably my favorite ID game aside from the original Doom. Of course I mean for the times that they came out (although Doom is still very playable even now). I found a mod that gave me HD textures, but could have played without. Great level design and interesting how tough all the Strogg aliens are. Good chunky arsenal of weapons, great detail and variety of enemies, puzzles that are fun but don't leave you stuck for hours upon end. The end of an era of classic FPS games before they got jaded and embraced naff gimmicks. There was a lot of hype when it was first released and it did not dissapoint. A really fun FPS game even better or a par with titles released decades later.

Awesome, today I mean

It's July 26, 2019, and I just download this incredible piece of software from 22 years ago, installed, and just lost 2 hours of my life like I did 22 years ago, not even realize it. That, before I decided to search for an actualiced engine and proceed to download (http://www.yamagi.org/quake2/). There, 2 hour later Im happy like a child. This is the mark of a awesome game. Its not nostalgia, Its pure gaming gold that can keep you going even 22 years later like nothing. Its the music, the pacing, the crude but efective gameplay. Its a jewel.

Down with the sickness!

The game in itself is good: I mean, it's an ID FPS after all. But what gets me is the awesome soundtrack! Back in the days you could just put the game CD in a player and it would explode from the speakers. It's just perfect and gives you the right boost to deal with the Stroggs. The only downside is that is a bit easy: even playing on nightmare it's not that hard comparing to other fps.

Works as well as installing

As with most games from the 90's where the audio was cd based (pre mp3, ogg being the norm). found a great little project that resolves that issue for me https://www.yamagi.org/quake2/ Anyhoo, great little game, and I got to relive my teen years a little.

Great Game

Edit: this was written before the remaster came out. Now you get the remaster as well which solves the issues below. The only negative on the remaster is no offline bots on CTF. Everything else is excellent. If you played Quake II in the past and want to get it back again, I would recommend this package. It is the original game, the mission packs, and EraserBot (the multiplayer bot package). Nice touch for me was having it packaged together so that launching EraserBot was relatively idiot-proof. Still need to google the bot commands though. The music may or may not work straight off, which is not ideal. There are some .ogg files in /QuakeII/music that may need CTRL+C, CTRL+V into /QuakeII/baseq2/music in order to work. Or it may be that you need to download those .ogg files and put them there yourself. It is very google-able and simple, even for someone like me. I can't remember exactly whether those .ogg files were part of the install but just in the wrong folder or whether they were missing altogether. The second thing that can improve the game is fullscreen and higher resolution, from the Quake 3.24 patch by Knightmare. Also not difficult to google and install.
