I cant stand this game, i really tried liking it, but is a mediocre shooter, everything feels so cringy, from the dialogue, i hate how everything is so mish mashed in the story. You cant sprint but shooting feels fast, the weapons actually feel ok. But i cant see any redeeming quality to this game, im not even interested in the strogg, i hate this game.
After the atmospheric, but mediocre Quake and forgettable Quake 2, this felt at first like a real generic sci-fi shooter. And for the most part, that rings true. The plot is thin and bland, the game seemingly forgets about halfway through- the turret and vehicle sections are not amazing. But on the good side, there's a great plot twist about half way through, there's a good variety of guns and none of them feel weak, and also the enemy variety is pretty decent. I'm surprised this came out AFTER Doom 3, it feels technologically inferior to Doom- but this has more enemies to fight, at the expense of atmosphere and story.
The railgun though, gotta say, not a great gun. It's got a 3 round clip and some common enemies take two shots a piece, at least playing on Hard. Very lackluster. In fact a lot of the advanced guns feel- subpar. I actually used the plain ole assault rifle the most. But all of the guns are useful in one situation or another, just not ALL situations.
Overall it was a good bit of fun.
Now, despite setting everything to Ultra (I play on Intel HD4000), the textures look just plain f*cking horrible. Seriously, they look even worse than those found in Quake 2, which graphically was more than OK for its times. And where is the config file? I heard the Steam release had the possibility to solve this issue by editing a config file; but here, it is nowhere to be found. Seriously, I've almost completed the game, and only now do I get to know that there could be a fix? This is f*cked up beyond belief. So I've tortured myself for like 8 hours without even realizing it, which, to me, makes giving this game 2 stars totally justified.
Let's talk about the game itself: the most annoying thing is that most of the game is comprised of dark corridors which force you to use a flashlight. And the only two weapons that allow you to use it is the machine gun and a crappy blaster similar to the pistol used in Q2, in that it has infinite ammo, but is weak af. This is lame beyond belief. So basically, this means you are restricted to using two weak-ass weapons while exploring the levels. And the worse thing is that towards the end of the game, where I am now, the enemies you'll have to face are stronger and will gang up on you, and this means, to quote the AVGN, you'll be getting buttf*cked up the d*ck all the time! And I'd say the levels themselves are pretty average, and there is not much variety. Well, what a shame. Had the devs fixed the broken textures thing, this would be a 6,5 out of 10 game: solid in some regards, but ultimately, just a mediocre shooter you should not bother with more than two days in a row during your weekend.
Quake 4 doesn't work on Windows 10 out of the box as Microsoft has blocked the SafeDisc driver, requiring the 1.4.2 point release patch to get Quake 4 working. When you contact iD Software to explain the problem and ask for the latest patch, you get ignored. When you contact iD Software's CEO directly, Kevin Cloud, and explain the problem and ask for the patch, you get told to download it from a random third party site, and then get ignored. Don't support a developer that does not care about its customers.
Yes, this game is full of wasted potentials! Just mediocre pre-cover-based almost military shooter. Single player campaign is short with bad story and turret section that last really long! Bad characters, zero motivation all actions in this game made by stupid reasons.
Raven can't make good modern games and we have 3 examples: Quake 4, Wolfenstein (2009) and Singularity.
Also, multiplayer "mod" wasn't developed by Raven and basically it's just Quake 3++
