Apparently does not come with CD key. This disables Quake 4 online gaming. I did purchase this from GOG but I ended getting it also via Steam as Steam version comes with CD key and full online functionality.
Raven Software was a studio experienced with the FPS genre, so seeing them taking the Quake series was quite an expectation, but unfortunately they are not id Software.
Direct sequel of Quake 2, the game tries to give a more "realistic" feeling with heavy inspirations from AlienS or Starship Troopers and why not ?
Now you have to reload, cover, do without bonuses like the Quad Damage, Invisibility, Invincibility...
The main problem comes from the level design : uninspired (it's just long corridors), it makes the gunfights a chore to play since you have sometimes to deal with large (and/ or heavily armed) enemies in tight areas where you can barely move whereas in the originals enemies size is adjusted to the areas so you have space to dodge (and that makes the fights exciting).
They also kept the usual flaw of the series : playing on high difficulty is not interesting, enemies are hp sponge that take ages to die and your amor is just paper towel.
So unless you're curious or just craving for a shooter, wait for a price drop. Otherwise stick with the ancestors, which are still masterclasses in level design.
when i try to start multiplayer in windows 10, the game crashes. single player works perfectly. it is an improvement over my old disc version however which crashed at the menu.
Remember Doom and Heretic? Remember how fast you moved? The exhilarating feeling of dancing around bullets, running like a happy dog in the big outdoor areas? In Quake 4 you move so slow I was searching for a patch to fix what I thought was an obvious program bug.
Remember Doom and Heretic? Remember the incredible atmosphere in those games? You really felt isolated in a hostile environment. Why? Because you never heard a single word in english. Just monster growls and the wind blowing leaves. Simple and effective. In Quake 4 everyone is talking, shouting, giving you orders, the intercom, irritating explosions, shut uuuup! Shut up and let me shoot monsters, explore the levels for (non-existing) secret areas and soak up the ambience!
There are better ways to tell a story than interrupting the action every 5 minutes for endless ramblings of npcs.
I don't want a cinematic experience on games, I want a gaming experience on games.
I value GoG's offline installer functinality, it's one of the few reasons I prefer GoG over other marketplaces.
Quake 4 is lacking an offline installer mode.
Regardless of anything else, that's a pretty big fail imo.
Actual game is okay, meaty fps.
