I have played all of the owlcat pathfinder games and they all have the same crap wrong with them. Tons of bugs and truley horrible game design that seemingly never seem to get fixed are but normal in these games. The developer seems much more interested in shoveling out the next thing for you to buy rather than fix the things that you just did. There are many frustrating bugs from the original kingmaker that will never get fixed and im certain this game is the exact same. Don't support new releases until the products that exist now get to a playable state.
So far i have gotten to the gray garrison lvl 2 why am i reviewing this game without clearing it? because i cant go any further because the game crashes my entire computer as soon as i try to go up the stairs to lvl3.
So here goes the score so far is.
Gameplay 6/10
Its serviceable no big innovation from the previous title or the genre at large
Stability: 0/10
Lots of bugs and in my case game breaking and system crashing ones
Story: 6/10
It's pretty good but well trodden ground. Amnesia hero, demons invade go kick them back.
Characters: 4/10
Most are kinda unlikable and bland and there is definitely some woke shenanigans involved but hey pathfinder 2ed is plagued by the same so its kinda faithful to the material i guess but it feels unnatural and forced.
Its no neverwinter nights, pillers of eternaty or baldersgate that's for sure i'd say pick it up after clearing those and after it has had alot of patches and maybe on a sale.
Whoever designed the NPCs must have graduated from Evergreen College, and wanted to appeal to a political audience on Twitter, instead of people who like role playing games and good stories.
Mild spoilers ahead.
I'm all for strong female leads like Arya Stark or Camina Drummer, or just >interesting< characters in general. But this ... this is 4th wave feminism indoctrination. In the first hour almost all relevant characters are women, men being reduced to grumpy nobles and the male token mutant in the party; for what ... reason? Well, I don't know.
I maybe could gloss over that, but this is so forced, even the story suffers from it. For example, right after the party emerges from its first dungeon, while there are still evil creatures lurking around, the the writers thought it necessary letting your newly acquired party member encounter and introduce her same-sex spouse, virtue-signalling how modern she is, and having a length dialogue how much they missed each other.
Speaking of modern ... The language.
Look, when I play Cyberpunk 2077 I EXPECT people to talk ... modern lingo. Because they have concepts and words as least as advanced as ours; but in a role playing game I F****** WANT PEOPLE TO BLEND INTO _THEIR_ WORLD. I stopped counting how many times NPCs use 20th century idioms ("cool"), casually know advanced concepts ("statistical probabilities"), and generally talk to my character like bubble-gum chewing teenagers at the bus stop.
As someone who played most Ultimas, Baldur's Gate, NWN, Skyrim, The Witcher, Divinity, Pillars of Eternity and the-f***-abomination the Pathfinder Kingmaker was on Day 1; I probably won't continue - let alone finish the game - FOR STORY REASONS; and I'm not even past level 3.
My recommendation: Go watch Ghostbusters 2016, then do another playthrough of Baldur's Gate 2. That way at least you'll play a well-written game.
Owlcat figured it was a good idea to destroy their image by releasing some spyware program to be included with the game on 7/24/2023 that is an "industry standard" to harvest your information to improve their advertising or whatever the corporate lie was. I barely tolerate the free services that track me constantly, but the fact that something I paid for is doing is doing it too crosses the line.
If you want to get to know me Owlcat, take me on a date.
I give it 2 stars because they went back on their idiotic decision but the fact that it was considered in the first place is a stain upon the company.
That all being said, I do like the game.
