Right out of the gates, you're thrown into an epic battle against demon hordes. The first real break in the story involves a dungeon full of demons that is nearly impossible to defeat without using story mode, thanks to their significant resistances and the fact that you haven't leveled nearly enough to have abilities to do damage to them.
Well... this is just another RPG in the style of the 'good old' Baldurs gate games. I really wanted to like this game, but it suffers from the same drawbacks, only we're 20 years later...
The game starts easy enough. Few spells and abilities and you can easily get killed by an overweight fly. Mid- to lategame you're swamped with spells, more spells, abilities and items. And encounters with huge difficulty spikes: hostiles stacked with protections / spells andsoforth. Finding the right strategy can be fulfilling, however in my opinion it gets tedious fast and resulting me in setting the difficulty to 'story' to get, well, the story going. There is always another demon or other one dimensional eeevil minion around the corner. And yes, like Baldurs gate, you get gawdlike powers in the form of mythic powers. Yay. another cluttering of spells and abilities to manage.
Another annoying bit is the crusade management. You have to manage an army (resource management, recruitment). It's like reading a book and then have to stop reading and pick up a totally different book. In my opinion it doesn't belong in this game. It's a roleplaying game. Not a strategy game. Fortunately it can be disabled, however the effort they put in this strategy element could better have been spent in the storytelling.
As for the story, it feels forced. It revolves about your character getting sucked (suckered?) in a crusade vs. demons with plentiful of side quests. Story is set, so not much influence in the outcome there. Your companions offer side quest from time to time. They feel forced however.
Doesn't sound very positive? That's right. If you really into DnD / Pathfinder and got plenty of time: no doubt, buy this game. You'll enjoy it.
The game is too repetetive and therefor time consuming in my opinion, and the story(telling) suffers from it. Would have liked the idea of the 'Through the Ashes' DLC be implemented in the main game, instead of the old Baldurs Gate plot.
Just like the title says. The game is a buggy mess on Apple machines, which it was advertised to as well. I can't progress past chapter 1, because of the infinite loading screen. There is tons of different memory leaks as well, which are making the game freeze after an hour or so.
Aside from that the game seems interesting.
Seems, because I can't play the product I have paid for.
