Boring, uninspired gameplay
Somewhat pretty graphics does not a fun game make. I played the first three missions of the Pacific campaign hoping that there would be something interesting to do and more of a variety than what was in the demo, but alas, there was not. There was very little to do except sometimes move your units and sometimes attack. The different abilities of the units didn't really add much and the 'specializations' were almost exclusively for naval units despite the combat of the first three missions being almost entirely land-based and generally consisted of a slow retreat across the map. I didn't think the supply system really made much of a difference and I felt I was constantly overmatched. (How is it that a coastal fortress cannon does no damage?) There is no control over entrenchment, no real combined arms or special attacks, nothing really interesting going on. Glad I bought it on sale.

Caveat Emptor!
Fictionalized history. To wit: The Pacific Campaign MUST be "won" by the Allies in effectively the same manner as in Europe. That is, you have to storm right into the Imperial Palace itself in Tokyo! Never mind the horrendous casualties on both sides this would have entailed on both sides had this operation actually been attempted. Why the A-bomb was used(twice!) to get Nippon, via the Emperor, to finally surrender. You are given the nuclear option, but you still have to employ ground troops to achieve victory. What a hollow one indeed if your men are exposed to lethal radiation as a result! There is a perverse nature to this "simulation" that isn't endearing or amusing. It's arbitrary, capricious, and ultimately unrealistic, even preposterous. A shiny looking package that isn't pretty at all when unwrapped and examined.
