The Malus are a product of their planet’s harsh environment. Scarce water, extremely high temperatures, and a volatile climate forged a stout and rigidly disciplined culture based on strength and triumph over adversity. They have come to see themselves as the rightful rulers of the cosmos. The Alyssians are an independent, self-sufficient and fatalistic race, who forsook their individualism for the greater good. They are democratic and egalitarian. However, in an age of scientific progress, those who excel in the military sciences are esteemed above all. Both races will soon discover they are not alone...
O.R.B., the acronym for Off-World Resource Base, is a real-time strategy game that involves the desperate struggle between the forces of two planets for control of the Aldus solar system. You command the military forces of both the Malus and the Alyssians - two radically different races with fundamentally different cultures and motives. Extract resources from asteroid belts throughout several systems to expand and build upon your fleet. Research new technologies to upgrade the capabilities of your existing ships and test your enemies by building new prototypes. Capture enemy ships and steal their technology to open up new research branches.
Multiplayer notice: The game's official multiplayer servers have been taken offline and the only multiplayer options available are LAN or Direct IP.
Two fully developed races with their own campaigns, strategies, and technologies.
Includes a campaign editor along with all the tools you need to script your own scenarios and campaigns.
Epic fleet combat with a plethora of vessels and specialized units such as: Duelist, Interceptor, Marksman, Destroyer, and Assault Carrier.

Navigation is poorly thought out, controls are very rigid creating an unpleasant experience.
Tutorial is very rigid too, you can't skip parts of it and can't speed up the game. Instead you have to wait 10-15-20 minutes (subjectively) for a ship to travel from A to B.
I uninstalled it after first mission.
A fairly reasonable space RTS,
Simillar both visualy and in way it plays to much more recognizable HW series. So if you have played everything HW has to offer and urn for more of the same, but bit less original ORB is for you.
If you happen to just be fan of space strategies this should also work fairly well, i can see this being something i'd play back in the day (early 2'000s) untill completition, just because i needed that sort of space gaming.
Conssider this strong middle of the road space game for those who like either RTS or space game genre.
Yet again!
This worked fine when I tried it many years ago.
Now when launching you just get a BARRAGE (about 40 or so) off pop-up errors stuffed with large amounts of gobbledygook.
No solutions on the forums as very few ever play this these days and there is scant activity over there.
YET IT IS STILL BEING PEDDELED! U suck GOG!
In fact it is on a 67% off sale at this very moment.
Don't waste your chocolate bar money on it!
You manage resources, build ships, conduct research and watch the story unfold.
Full 3d environment RTS's are quite rare and this is one of them; the ai is mostly 2 dimensional in it's strategy, but you can go right around their assest on any axis.
I really enjoyed the story in this and the ending. The only thing I was disappointed with, is the fact that you cannot play any of the alien races in skirmish or multiplayer... only Malus or Alyssian.
The game play, and story of ORB are actually quite good. Especially for this price. The main failing of the game is that it ends too early. There's never really a resolution, the campaign just abruptly ends.
Too bad, this could have been a game on the scale of Homeworld.
