Do not waste your money. Oh it looks amazing, and if it worked, I'd be happy as could be. But you can't finish the game. When you try to do to D'ni, to meet Atrus, the game freezes, and quits. Sometimes it even forces a restart of my computer. I got all the way to the end, for this? No. If you're going to release a game that people love, and would spend money on, release a game that works!
Was excited to get this for the Mac. But....it doesn't support moving using the mouse?! Have to use keyboard to navigate?! How can a game in this day not support the mouse?
Second thing: even at low quality settings, this game causes the fans in my top of the line MacBook Pro be pegged on high the entire time and its still very jerky and dropping frames. By contrast Obduction was much smoother and didn't cause any fan issue.
If they can fix the mouse support and the fan issue, the game would be at least a four star. I am a huge Myst fan and was really looking forward to this. Hoping they will address the concerns.
I’ve lived through all versions of MYST going all the way back to the beginning and I own and have played all of them. I was looking forward to this ‘remake’ just for the graphics but like so many remakes, they went to far. They should have been satisfied with higher resolution graphics and left the functionality of the animations and the characters alone!! This one missed the mark. I wouldn’t have spent the money had I known they wrecked the experience.
Oh, and I discovered a bug in the first 5 minutes - when you first arrive on MYST island walk a few steps toward the submerged ship and step up onto the platform like you’re going to step off onto the ship. Now turn to the right and look at the main mast. See it?
It took a lot of debugging to get this working properly in VR. To be fair, I am using a Windows Mixed Reality headset via SteamVR, so its not officially supported according to the list. The particular bugs I've encountered are:
- the video shows on the desktop instead of the vr monitor unless you launch the game from "Windows Desktop" from within Windows Mixed Reality
- audio sometimes doesn't work on either headset or desktop. I haven't found a consistent way to get audio working yet
- the controller didn't come with any bindings, and a lot of the commands to bind are not very descriptive. It was a lot of guesswork to get working controller bindings. This might be better on Steam because you can use the Steam workshop to find bindings others have already figured out.
- the graphics settings are somewhat buggy and some settings seem unsupported (in particular, ray tracing)
Overall, I expect that Steam will improve the VR support (by launching VR properly through SteamVR, and by making it easier to get working controller bindings), but once you get it working, it turns out Myst translates quite well to VR!
