Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden Demo
The game is very appealing in terms of game design and entourage, but everything is utterly ruined by flawed game mechanics.
You will like it if you are not looking for a challenge, but if you are, then constant shots through solid obstacles by the enemies, when the game itself says there is NO LINE OF SIGHT will piss you off. Had to drop it just because of this seemingly minor issue which destroys all tactical efforts.
Also poor optimization: the game isn't that technologically advanced to show such poor performance.
This game has a great setting, but as others have pointed out, it makes some odd choices. You have to kill every single enemy in every area, which the game really doesn't tell you. You only discover this strange quirk when you find out that your level cannot keep up with the enemies at some point. The game should reward stealth more, or have a different angle that makes it clear that you should make a complete cleansing of the map. This makes it very confusing, and it also makes the game feel boring and like more of a chore. The gameplay also feels clunky and unfinished, and the story never really feels gripping. It's a shame. However, if you like to try out small games with great promise, this might be for you. For me, it was a waste of time.
Do not judge the game by the demo. The demo is great but it represents play before the difficulty spikes. When that happens it changes the fun interesting game into miserable work. The graphics are nice but shaky on my laptop. Advancement options are very limited. Game is very linear. Quest areas are small.
I could have shrugged all of that off if it didn’t turn into endless suicide runs once the human mutant invites herself into your group. After the fifteenth time trying to figure out exactly what builds and tactics the game was trying to force me to use I got sick of it. I want to play a game, not memorize fight sequences.
Very disappointed.
One of the characters is a duck, named "Dux" with duct tape on his bill. The game marketing makes you believe you'll be on a 'buddy cop' style adventure only to realize it's a sad and depressing post-post apocalyptic drag. Much like "We Happy Few" this game runs out of atmosphere after the first couple of hours. I shouldn't be surprised since most people don't bother to finish video games anymore.
Given the amount of baddies for each encounter, stealth kills should NOT have a miss opportunity!
While not without issues, the tactical aspect could be deeper, this game is a true gem. Personally I hope it is the first in a long line of Mutant Year Zero games.
