MOO2 The 4X I always come back to..
I've tried a lot of 4X games and there is just something about MOO2 that keeps me coming back to play a game or two. Granted MOO2 has some balance issues. Especially if you take advantage of certain tech against the AI. But the game has aged surprising well and I think it has something to do with personality it has. Modern space 4X games seem to lack a focus on cool tech or fail to offer tactical space combat. I hate the paper, rock, scissors approach to weapon vs. defenses that modern games often take. I guess the biggest disappointment is that no one has taken MOO2 and kept what works and/or expanded on it. I suppose everyone has a different take on that and hence the problem.

Master of Orion 2 - still the best
Master of Orion 2 is still the best X4 game ever created. I would give 10 Stars if possible. Its more than 20 years old, but i still play it from time to time, even while it's kinda easy if you know how to do it after thousands of games... but still every game has its own charme, every time there are other planets, every time the aliens are different. Sometimes you have luck and sometimes you dont have ;) But its always fun to play, especially if you have badluck and try to get along. I haven't played the new MoO remake, because I dont like the idea of "Star Roads". In Master of Orion 2 you can fly everywhere (as long as you have enough fuel). This freedom is imho one of the best things in MoO2. Oh, and the Soundtrack / Graphics are awesome.

Definetly GoG Material
Master of Orion 2 is worth the 6$ price tag alone, and I'm sure MoO1 is a welcome addition (having unfortunately missed it). I used to play this games quite a bit. The depth at which you can customize your race, planets, ships, and research are all massive. The real seller? Hot Seat Mode to play with your friends. How many games have THAT nowadays?

Too Many Enjoyable Hours...
...were spent playing both of these games. In both games you play the leader of a dictatorial dynasty leading your race to be the power of the Galaxy. Decided on what your colonies will build, what your scientists will discover, and what your shipyards will build so that you can become the dominant species. Masters of Orion 1 (MOO1) is a simpler version of Masters of Orion 2 (MOO2). Yet in most cases neither MOO1's simplicity nor MOO2's additional complexity detracts from either game's enjoyment or fun. When MOO2 came out, after about a month, I started to play MOO1 again, but did not stop playing MOO2. The only thing that every bothered me about both games had to do with ship construction. In MOO1, after designing a ship and starting building it, if a new discovery appeared, you would have to scrap an entire class of ships to include the new invention. In MOO2, this was changed in that you could change the components of your ships as your technology advanced, either by redesigning while building or sending the ship in to the yards to be upgraded. The great thing about MOO1's way is you could have swarms of ships to send into the attack. The great thing about MOO2's way is you had individual ships that I gave all my capital vessels unique names. But this individuality kept you from creating swarms of ships, therefore severely limiting the number of ships per battle. But that one flaw never stopped my desire to play this game. It has been a few years since i last played either game and was just thinking about finding my discs again to play these games. Thanks GOG!
