Better than most modern stuff

Yeah, that's right, I prefer this to Galactic Civ. You can just jump right in and actually *gasp* control combat directly if you like, with all the strategy. Unlike watching ships slowly drift about like jellyfish, occasionally a bright line connecting the two and doing damage *boring.* It actually matters which direction the guns are facing on the ship, and how fast it can move and turn (what good is your lumbering battleship with all its mighty forward facing death cannons, if a more maneuverable enemy gets behind it?) The ability to hire leaders for your planets and fleets (each with certain individual skills and bonuses) is also a really neat touch. Really, I have no problems with this game. It's the perfect turn-based space-conquest and colonize game. The graphics don't bother me one bit (I find myself not even noticing once I get going.)

Classics of the 4X genre

Each of these games are classics of computer gaming, are very influential on the development of modern 4X games, and in many ways are still every bit their equal despite the "datedness" of the graphics. They both feature turn-based strategic and tactical maps, allowing you to make high-level imperial decisions and also engage in tactical combat with ships you design. Each offer different takes on Imperial management and some may prefer one over the other. In MoO1, much of the direction is handled by funding and research sliders which stipulates how much is to be spent on each area of the economy and how much expertise to assign to each research field. In MoO2, one has discrete population units assigned to various lines of work and you build specific buildings to your colonies. In MoO2, you research one field of study at a time. There are of course many other differences, but these cover the basic differences in management between the two games. Thankfully with GOG you don't have to choose, you get both in the same package! For the great price and minuscule amount of space they require, you should definitely buy these classics.

MoO 1+2

I owned these games when they first came out for Windows and they are brilliant. Hours and hours of game time. You can custom build your fleet, face them against enemies in tactical battle screens, conquer worlds, and colonize new systems. Make alliances, trade agreements, spy, espionage, and research technology to get the edge over other races as you vie for power. There are a lot of interesting decisions to make. Do I colonize this planet or that one? Will I defend them with missile bases, battle stations or fleets? You'll have to decide what technologies are important to research. They will be the ones you will use to expand your empire. Focus too much on industry/science/population, sacrificing ship production, and you'll only make wonderful planets to be ransacked by your neighbors. Diplomacy and spy networks grant a significant edge to the cunning player. Trade agreements can bolster the treasury or give bonuses to research. Neutralizing an opponent by allying with them can be more effective than war, especially when it is solidified by annihilating a common enemy! Create spies to surveillance and carry out missions against them. Use sabotage to destroy industries or espionage to steal research, and even frame another race. Many interesting races to choose from, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. This with randomly generated galaxies and opponents makes the game playable over and over again. All in all, great games. Definitely worth having in any strategy buff's collection!

First timer, still classic.

I'll be honest, I had actually never played MOO1 or MOO2 despite being a space 4x / strategy game nut all my life, digesting every space game i could find. I gave this a go, so many years after its release, and it still blows me away. It has such intricate well designed elements to it that even the great games of today (Galciv2 etc) failed to capture. I truly can not believe that I never played this game before, even after all this time it still gives one hell of a first impression! I'll be playing this more than Galciv2 this summer.
