Your mission: colonize new worlds on distant planets. As the Mission Commander, you and the Mechanized Assault & Exploration (M.A.X.) force under your command are the first ones in. Mining stations, power plants, tactical combat vehicle factories, habitats – it's up to you to plan and construct them.
The entire new colony? You create it. The resources you find there? Control them. Enemies? Crush 'em! And there will be enemies. You're not the only Mission Commander trying to colonize the planets. You'll have to push yourself to the limit to survive the ultimate showdown in strategic warfare. It's espionage, heavy artillery, offensives, counter offensives and intelligence – all with maximum consequences.
At its core, M.A.X. is about resource-gathering, building, and tactical combat. The game offers more than 50 land, sea, and air units, most of which can be upgraded to improve their armor, speed, and range. You can play as one of eight different factions with different advantages for each one. Discover new scenarios, units and more with the sequel - M.A.X. 2. Now both games bundled together!

I have to say - I was very sceptic buying this game again(I bought the orginal Interplay version in the 90's).
Why - great game, but I always had crashing problems(I could never finish a game, it always got stuck) but this evening I finished my first M.A.X. game ever(of course I won ;-) ). Today it went till round 204, in the next days I will start a new battle with a more difficult oponent, lets see how that goes.
Anyway, in the 90's I could never reach anything higher then round 145 or so.
Thanks gog for that game, great job!
What an immersive game. The ambiant is very good. Sometimes reminding me some "Demolition man" sounds effects.. xD
The game has 2 differents gameplays; turn based or simultaneous. It gives the game different strategies.
If you play with friends on your computer you will play turn based, while if you want to play with 7 friends on internet you will play with simultaneous turns. :)
(I'm not sure what's the limit without MAX-Revolution ... same as single-player?)
I remember playing both parts of M.A.X. when they came out and I still remember a lot of very tactical battles (usually I was concentrating and superior range and efficiency of rockets).
What I liked most where the specialities of water, ground and air units as well as the scenario settings and different factions and their special abilities.
However, now I bought it again here on GOG and played it again but after a few starts and a few minutes gameplay I stopped because the user interface and graphics is unfortunately not so pleasant that one can get immediately into it again.
A polished version (graphics and user interface) with 90% identical gameplay would be nice.
This is a classic military strategy game where choose your favorite race and develop your technology and production facilities to maximize your specific advantages. This game could have been better with a random map generator, but that is about the only reason I don't give it a 5/5.
Gonna be a very short review
M.A.X is a strategy turn based game which in my opinion is the best at that time. You had everything. From ground, to naval to air with all kinds of craft and vehicles to choose from with each their respective roles. Choose wisely because the correct vehicle because every tank has its counterpart. So choosing a tank for example will make you vulnerable to ground attack airplane and so on.
There's also 8 factions that have their own strength and weakness so you have endless replayability and that increases the strategy value as well. You also have the usual ressource management on top of that so M.A.X is not only very good...personally I think its the best.
M.A.X 2 is where the shit starts. You see, they removed the unit grouping like in M.A.X. In the second installment, you can only group 8 unit maximum which makes managing a large group a huge nightmare. I think they tried to find a solution to the so called problem in M.A.X 1 where you could send millions of units in the base (personally, its not a problem if you want to annihilate it).
For some reason unit grouping gets removed after some time. So this is frustrating a lot. Theres also the weird fog of war when you turn it off, it reveals all the map without the enemies on it ??? why turn it off then ? the APC has some problems as well when you have to select each unit manually, one by one, to get them inside the apc...its frustrating as well. Theres also no tutorial like in max 1.
Thats why I give this a 4 out of 5 because M.A.X 2 is just not good enough. The developers didn't test it and if they did...they did a bad job. Just stick with M.A.X 1 and you'll be amazed at how an old strategy game can get you hooked. I mean, theres a tutorial in max 1, scenarios, the campaign, hot seat mode.
